- Steve McEachern talked about the recent memorial service for long-time Rotarian George Stout. He also talked about some of the history of the South Edmonton Club's involvement with the Harvest Fair at Fort Edmonton Park.
- Zen Moisey also talked about Rotary's long history at Fort Edmonton Park, how the Moiseys and the Blimkes recently attended a fund-raising dinner at the park, and Rotary's project to link the Capitol Theatre and the Selkirk Hotel with the Windsor Block. Zen also noted that his guest - Don Kaye has his name on the new Edmonton Clinic at the U of A Campus & promised we would hear more about that soon.
- Steve McEachern told a story about the difference between Grandmothers and Grandfathers and raised a few $ for the fines fund.
- 50/50 Draw - Dentists Joe & Doug failed to match cards.
- Jim Spalding has tickets for the Cosmopolitan Music Society Remembrance Day Concert at the Jubilee Auditorium.
- This is the second notice that Raj Sran has been proposed for membership in the Club by Chris Gowers.
- Please give Brian a call to pre-order your Safeway, Sobeys / IGA or Save On Foods Grocery Gift Cards. We have them in demoninations of $10, $25, $50, $100 and $500. Think about using them as Christmas gifts or even tips for those who provide you with a service.
- The Westerner eBulletins are read not only by the members of this Club to whom they are sent via e-Mail, they are also read by our former members, our exchange students, many Rotarians, Rotaractors & Interactors, plus they are read by anyone who visits our Website. We are fortunate that John Blimke, Zen Moisey, Ben Doz and Joe Lizotte have chosen to advertise their businesses in the e-Bulletins and on the Website. If you click on their adverts either on the Website or in the e-Bulletin you will be immediately linked to their business website. Give it a try and you might be surprised. We could certainly use more sponsors to offset the costs of operating the Website and sending out the Westerners, so if you would like to advertise your business or organization in this manner ($100 for a full 12 months), please call Brian to discuss or arrange.
PROGRAM:
Because scheduled speaker Dave Turner had to leave to tend to wife Carol who had fallen at home, President Duane asked anyone who had stories to share with the other members to come forward:
- Duane talked about his involvement with the proposed reversal of flow in a pipeline from Hamilton to Montreal and how he would be heading off to Montreal next week for more hearings before the National Energy Board. Good luck Duane.
- Jerome talked about the District Conference being held at the Shaw Convention Centre this coming weekend. As Chair of the District Public Relations Committee, Jerome is involved in sending out an e-Mail message this week advising Rotarians how they can follow and participate in the conference via Facebook and Twitter. He also talked about the new RI Website and how easy it is to get information about any aspect of Rotary that one is interested in. Try it out at Rotary.org.
- Jim Spalding told a story about a power failure at Marmot Basin Ski Lodge due to some construction activity hitting a gas line, which meant the gas-powered electrical generator was down. This led to the patrons being fed at the lodge by staff who brought in their own BBQs, plus people using the fireplaces to keep warm and one particular fireplace where the damper didn't work properly, the room filling with smoke, and the patrons coming home to Edmonton smelling like they had been out camping.
- Joe Lizotte talked about a recent function celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Edmonton Dental Society. Both he and Doug MacDougall are Past Presidents of that organization, and Doug presented an interesting history of the Society at the function.
- Dan Graham talked about a family wedding at Snow Valley clubhouse and how it is such a good venue. He went on to tell a joke about Elementary School.
