Guest Speakers: New Generations Day hosted by Lorne
Edmonton Centennial Interact Club: Erin Yurchi and Erin Wallace updated our knowledge about this club which our Rotary Club co-sponsored back in 2005. Lorne advised that the brochure given out in the spring by Centennial et al showed 32 members for the Ross Shepard High School based club.
The Erins advised that this was the first Edmonton based Interact club and the second in Rotary International District 5370. There is a general meeting every Thursday and a board meeting every Friday. They participate in community oriented projects every week - like Coronation Elementary School for reading and sports buddies. Kids Cottage every second Saturday (a children's crisis centre) where they play and cook meals. Their participation at the Stollery Children's Hospital is on hold as the "beach" is under a construction delay. They have started going to McQueens Senior Home to dust and clean for the residents. They participate at Edmonton Heritage Festival selling tickets which earns some income for the club. Halloween for Hunger raises donations of food for the food bank. On occasion they help out at either Bissell Centre or Hope Mission to assist with inner city problems.
On the international stage they work in Belize, a trip every second year - held last spring, where they assist with 2 schools to help improve the education system. Since 2007, they have worked with Eden Primary School providing desks and school supplies. Ocean Academy, a private school, has received their help in developing a computer lab. Edmonton Centennial also provides funds towards tuition for students that need help. During last spring's trip they provided a sports camp at Ocean and mixed and poured concrete at Eden for a new building.
Fund Raisers include football game raffle (based on Ross Shep versus Jasper Place game); and the spring banquet which is completely student organized. Last spring they raised $14,000 which helped with costs of Belize trip - from silent auction, band, meal. They are looking for sponsors for next banquet to be held March 8, 2013, at the Ramada. Thanks to last year's sponsors Driving Force (John), Edmonton Real Estate Board (Ron); and Jasper Dental (Joe).
Lois Hole Award: previous president of Edmonton Centennial Interact Club Kirsten Poon was invited to advise us about the award she recently won. She has been at the U of A but has taken a year off her studies to do more volunteer work. She has qualified for medical school. Kirsten advised that Rotary, Interact and now Rotoract have opened her eyes to service and leadership. She has been vice president of the Rotoract Edmonton Centre Club and has participated on the City of Edmonton Youth Coucil which advises Edmonton City Council about the needs of the city's youth. She chaired a committee that raised $100,000 for the Boyle Street area initiatives and has worked to improve literacy in local communities. She had a leading hand in developing the Street Murals Project where young street people develop murals instead of graffiti. Bus tours for youth to visit homeless shelters was another initiative. Kirsten thanked Jennifer for getting her started on this life voyage.
Adventure in Citizenship: another Centennial Interact member, Florie Saslavsky, was sponsored by Rotary Club of Edmonton West to attend this long standing program sponsored by Rotary Club of Ottawa. Miao Tsai was quite pleased to hear about the current success of one of his club's special projects. There were 224 participants from across Canada and Florie developed a close friendship with several of them. The guests were hosted by Rotarian families and it was a great interactive program. A welcome BBQ, a visit to the House of Commons {a hilite was the personal introduction to House of Common pages and the Honouarble Speaker of the House}. They also met some ambassadors to Canada from abroad. The program helped Florrie decide upon her future university training - global politics at Carelton University. There was also a presentation at the University of Ottawa on literaracy and a visit to the national aviation museum. Florie thanked our club for sponsoring her.
Danny Chau thanked all speakers.
