Guest Speaker:  Jerome introduced Enbridge Artist in Residence and Community Ambassador for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (ESO) Lucas Waldin.  Lucas won a Canada Council Award in 2012.  His main focus is to provide music prgraming and education to the community, especially for children.  Three years ago Lucas moved from Europe to Edmonton with his girlfriend (married this spring) and joined the ESO as resident conductor.  His wife is a member of the Rotary Club that meets on Whyte Avenue at 5:30 pm.  Originally from Toronto, Lucas obtained music education in Cleveland and New York City.  Prior to getting into conducting Lucas played the flute.  In order to gain experience in conducting, he moved to Europe where he met his wife in Paris, and got exposed to various music venues in France and Germany.

A conductor has get responsiblity to get the total orchetra music across to the audience through that orchestra.  The individual orchestra members only know their part but it gets coordinated into a beautiful performance by the conductor drawing the best from each player and ensuring that each player plays his/her part at the right time at the right tempo at the right volume.

Lucas has a B. A. in flute playing and a M. A. in conducting (both obtained in Cleveland).  Lucas had various auditions for conducting positions in the USA, Quebec and Europe with no luck.  Then he got the wonderful position with the wonderful orchestra in Edmonton.  He impressed during his 3 year position and the orchestra has created a new position to keep him in Edmonton and make sure the northern Alberta community gains from knowing more about music, especailly good music from the ESO (*not all of it is classical).

Lucas is bringing an aboriginal focus to the ESO.  The aboriginal cultures are happy that the ESO work with their youth in part to enhance the cultural knowledge.  Metis violin players and Hobbema dancers participate in youth oriented concerts at the Winspear Centre.

Recently the ESO was one of six orchestras that participated in "Spring for Music" at Carnegie Hall.  It was an amazing experience, especially for Lucas who had previously spent a lot of time there in the audience area, not on stage.  This was incorporated into the 60th anniversary celebrations for the ESO.  Keep in mind it is also 15 years for the Winspear Centre.

Lucas was thanked by Bert.
