Guest Speaker: Rob Dunseith introduced Sargeant Simon Perry of the Edmonton Police Service. Simon has served for 24 years, the last 3 in training police recruits. He has also served in South, Traffic, Downtown, West and Beat Sargeant Downtown divisions.
EPS recognizes service (like Rotary) - they changed their name 22 years ago - police have similar goals to Rotary. They attract people that want to get involved in community and promote integrity - no credibility without it.
The program is Community Problem Solving. New recruits listen to instructions, follow instructions, then be professional. The police relate to courage, community, integrity, accountability, innovation, respect. The problem based learning program takes 1 year - 25 weeks in acedemy, 23 weeks in the field, 2 weeks in academy. 500 new recruits in last 3 yeaars. Total force is 1700. 50 members per class. Simon challenges recruits daily to get them outside their comfort zone - leads to properly formed split second decisions. The police look for positive impact on the members of our community by applying a professional, personable relationship.
Community Based Policing is equivalent to Rotary's Community Service. After graduation, recruits spend 3-4 years on patrol - responding to citizen calls. Simon has to show that he can do everything that he asks the recruits to do, including the runs. 1 of between 100 and 200 applicants are accepted to training. They lose about 10% in the first 20 weeks.
Simon was thanked by Mike Ryan.
