Guest Speaker:  Introduced by Don McDermid, Major Breen has been involved with cadets since his sons got him involved in 1994.  He has been with 395 Squadron since 2008.  Chief Warrant Officer Podkowka joined 395 Sqadron in 2006, when he was 12 years old, and was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer last October.

John brought greetings from the squadron, our club has been sponsor since 1983 (29 years) and he thanked the members of the sponsorship committee, Don McDermid, Al Holmes, Bill Buckham and Danny Chau (one of Danny's sons is a cadet with the squadron).  In the last Griffon Dress Parade, the reviewing officer was commanding officer of 417 Griffon Helicopter Squadron (based at Cold Lake).  395 is one of 42 air cadet squadrons in Alberta and is the third largest on the prairie provinces.

The curriculum follows the DND {Department of National Defence} mandated training program.  All cadets are airbourne several times per year.  They mentor leadership growth in youth.  The top cadet ranks include one Chief Warrant Officer and 5 Warrant Officer Second Class.  Other activities include martial arts and some cadets have earned their black belt.  In addition to the cadets born in Canada there is a growing number born internationally.  There is no cost to the cadet so the program is available to all youth.  Wings are awarded every year to cadets that may never have been able to entertain the thought of flying without the no personal cost cadet program.  In June, 2012, the squadron celebrates the end of its 66th year.

Rotarians can attend any parade during the year.  Contact one of the sponsor group to arrange for your personal tour guide [a cadet will give you the grand tour].  They have a very well developed and manged web site that is an excellent recruiting tool.

Chief Podkowka is known as "Chief", has earned both his glider and powered flight wings from cadets and the National Air Cadet Music Award of Excellence.  When he started cadets he was an introvert, now an extrovert.  He has stayed in cadets because of the variety of programs.  Cadets need to be kept engaged/busy.  Programs include meteorology, navigation, drill, instruction to others, marksmanship, band, aviation, airport operation, flying.  Chief attended 3 music camps in either Penhold or Cold Lake.  First year cadets attend for general training in their first camp.  A video on gliding, produced by a 15 year old cadet from 395 Squadron, was shown.

Scholarship boards are currently sitting to award various scholarships.  Dylan has applied for the International Air Cadet Exchange Course to either Switzerland or Germany.

The speakers were thanked by Sandon.
