Guest Speaker: Ross Hallett talked about archery. Ross has been an archery instructor since 1962, when he developed a program for Scouts Canada.
500 hundred years ago, there was the age of the long bow which was a bent tree limb (elm or hickory) - an inefficient type of weapon. Asians developed a recurve bow which gave greater cast to the arrow. Bows used to be wood but, now, the handle can be metal. The Persians used bone for the handle. Bow and Arrow is a lethal weapon. The arrow has its greatest force at point of impact (arc through the air maintains force) whereas bullet has greatest force just inches from the gun barrel.
A cross bow is not a bow but a catapult.
As an Olympic Sport, there are three styles=instinctive (no mechanical help), free style (sight on mechanical recurve bow) and unlimited (any mechanical assist available). Target arrow is wood with a metal tip and either plastic fletchings or turkey feathers. Hunting arrow is used with a compund bow and is composed of graphite shaft and razor blade tip (kills by bleeding).
Safety items - when draw the bow, fingers can become abraised - thus wear protection or use trigger release for the string; bow string can take skin off elbow - thus wear arm guard. You draw the bow to your dominant eye - determines whether you are right or left handed.
