395 Air Cadet Alumni: Brian Andrus thanked the Rotary Club of Edmonton West for a donation which enabled the group to start a formal alumni association; they now have 117 alumni registered; the squadron was started April 11, 1946; they will be working to celebrate the 70th anniversary in 2016.
Gift Cards: see Brian to purchase - profits support our projects. We will be e-mailing an order form to all members, which can be shared with friends and family. When you order, please fill out to top part of the form only and then give it and a cheque for the total of the order to Brian at a meeting. When Brian gives you your cards he will fill in the bottom part of the form and sign it as your receipt. It is apparent that the higher value cards are the most popular, and we will run out of them first, so if you order a $100 Sobeys/IGA card, we may have to supply you with two $50 cards (this is an example only).

Guest Speaker: Bob Lamoureux introduced Sheila Stauffer, director of Corner Stone Counselling Centre which provides both full price and subsidized counselling services. Sheila's prior experience comes from tenure with child welfare services in Alberta. Corner Stone is a not for profit organization, started in the 1970's, which utililizes registered psychologists, clinical social workers and certified counsellors. The fees are based on the family income. Location is at 101 Avenue and 117 Street.
The 18 counseillors are either PHd or Master level of education except for students working out their practicum. The centre provides services to individuals from all walks of life. They treat depression, anger management, stress management, marriage counselling (1/3 of clients), play therapy for children - play is how children learn (10% of clients), marriage preparation classes, career and leadership counselling, addiction counselling.
Some clients pay full fee of $170 per hour. Subsidized rates can be as low as $20 per hour if counselling is done by a student. Alberta Health Care has very few programs to deal with counselling needs.
Corner Stone gets some government grants and some support from foundations. The rest comes from fund raising which includes Paddling for Compassion. Participants start with a breakfast (sponsored this year by another Rotary Club), they paddle down the river from Laurier Park to Capilano Park (adequate supervision is provided at all time) and finish with a lunch. Particpants run from 10 years of age to seniors in their 70's.
Sheila was thanked by Bert.
