Ambassadorial Scholar
The Rotary Club of Edmonton West is very pleased to endorse the application of Lena Bunzenmeyer for a 2008-09 Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship. The photo shows Lena with Past International Service Director Ann Orsini. District 5370 has selected Lena as their nominee, and we have confirmation that she will be attending the University of Manchester in Manchester, England.
Lena is a Civil / Environmental Engineer by training, who has been working for CUSO in Indonesia. She was helping to develop water supply solutions for indigenous communities in Indonesian Borneo, and researching the use of charcoal in traditional slow-sand filters to remove mercury from drinking water sources, a by-product of small scale, illegal, gold mining operations in the area.
She is applying for a full Academic Year Scholarship to study to obtain a Master of Science Degree in International Development: Environment and Development at the University of Manchester in England, or the equivalent at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, England. Both Universities have accepted her application, but she will not choose until learning whether her application for the Rotary Scholarship has been successful.
She views clean water as an international issue and wishes to contribute to the global recognition of it's importance.
If you had a chance to meet Lena at our meeting on Monday, March 17th, you will agree that she is an excellent choice for this scholarship, and that she will be an excellent ambassador for our Rotary Club, for District 5370 and for Canada.
