Belize: Education Projects

The Rotary Club of Edmonton West has been active in the Village of Placencia, Belize for many years. In collaboration with the Rotary Club of Placencia, a number of projects have been completed while some are being implemented on a continuous basis. Almost all of the Clubs’ efforts are related to education. Examples of some of the completed projects are an extension to a teaching annex for a school in the neighboring village of Seine Bight and the installation of sanitary toilet facilities at the Placencia School.

Ongoing activities include the provision of scholarship funding for several underprivileged students so that they may continue their schooling and advance to high school and beyond. Funding is also provided to the local high school in the neighboring village of Independence in order that critical educational materials and supplies may be provided.  highly successful summer literacy program is offered each year where educational professionals from Edmonton work jointly with the Rotary Club of Placencia to provide literacy clinics to students in need.

Several Rotarians from the Edmonton West Club partner with members of the Placencia Club to do some “hands on “ work within the village each year. Work product examples are picnic tables and benches and a life guard tower in the public beach area. The Club champions for this project are Fred Kraft and Duane Evans.

Guatemala: Eye Care Clinics

Almost every year for over 15 years, Edmonton West member and optometrist Dr. Ben Doz and his wife Marley, along with a team of Rotarians, have been travelling to Guatemala to conduct eye clinics in remote villages. The clinics are arranged by Dr. Carlos Solorzano, an opthamologist and member of the Rotary Club of Huehuetenango, Guatemala.

These clinics provide free eye examinations, dispensing of medications, eye surgeries and dispensing of free eye glasses to the poor people who not only have no access to such services, but who could not afford them even if they had access. To participate in one of Ben's adventure missions, contact us. We will indicate your interest to him. The payback will be enormous!

Cambodia: Rural School Development

To date the project has developed a water well and provided slow sand filters for the school children’s drinking water. School supplies and learning and teaching materials have also been provided to the students and teachers.

The project has engaged local authorities, parents of students, school teachers and the Rotarians in the Rotaru Club of Pursat. Planned activities for the coming months include improvements to the water supply, additional school supplies and funding for education/community development workers.
