The concept of "Third Place" is one where a man or a woman can go to put aside the cares and responsibilities of his/her life for a time of relaxation and reflection.  It is more than just a golf game or a cottage retreat.  It involves unstressed companionship, conversation and a sense of belonging.  In some cultures, men and wonen might meet at a tea house or a club, but the important aspect is it is a retreat from the cares of family and career for a short period.

As Rotarians, we are reminded that our homes and families come first and our careers second.  Our meeting for lunch offers us respite from these cares in a way we overlook.  True, we promote our meeting as a place to learn, to develop our skills, and our improvement as men and women.  But let us not forget to appreciate that this is a place where we can put away the stress of our lives behind us for a lunch and enjoy good fellowship of like-minded men and women.

The basis of Rotary is fellowship.
