The Westerner for September 26 and October 3, 2011
September 26 meeting was held at the Grandview Extended Care Centre auditoruim which was completely filled. 30 Rotarians with their guests (Janet Stoby, spouse of Bill Macdonald; Margaret Stoby, mother in law to Bill Macdonald and resident of Grandview for rehab to a broken leg; Jean Lang, spouse to Ben Lang and Jean's daughter, Gail Larkin, a resident of Grandview; Catherine Wright, proposed Rotary member; Jacquie Lamoureux, daugther to Bob Lamoureux; Carol Turner, spouse to Dave Turner; Darrel Ripley, proposed Rotary member; Sherry Schaeter, guest speaker on behalf of Capital Care Foundation). met to be entertained by Jerome Martin (pianist supreme on the new grand piano) and Jerome's favorite bass player, Art Fadum.
Sherry Schaeter told us about many facits of the Capital Care Foundation including the program to refit the entire floors of Grandview and 2 other extended care centres to make them more like living in your own home. Grandview renovations are the first to occur with changes being made to the second floor. These include removal of the secured, locked dementia unit and production of eating areas where food would be served family style. This means that many meals would have servers bring bowls or platters of food and serve the guest's with requested amounts rather than have pre planned, prepared plates served in a cafeteria style. Families could readily join the resident to enjoy family meals.
Jerome advised there is a program being developed to hold a series of concerts at Grandview, two of which will be held before the end of 2011. i Ciristi, a community based choir of 18 - 22 members formed by Dr. Debra Cairns, will entertain on November 18. They focus on choral masterpieces from the Renaissance to the twentieth century. December 14 will be a presentation of "Christmas and all that Jazz" by the Lazy River Quintet (Jerome, Ed Schultz and friends). Mark you calendar for attendance; guests invited.
Condolences: Lynette Esak's father passed away in Vegreville; best wishes to Lynette to overcome this set back; she hopes to rejoin our Rotary club soon. We look forward to Lynette's enthusiastic contributions.
Date Change for Luncheon Meeting: John Carruthers, president of Northern Gateway Pipeline Co., can talk to our club on Tuesday November 1 but not on Monday October 31. The board of directors felt a change of date was warranted due to the current topical interest that members would experience in hearing about the Gateway Pipeline Project [from Alberta to the west coast]. Invite your work associates, neighbors, family members and/or prospective members to attend as your guest.
