The Westerner for November 29, 2010
Posted by Jerome Martin
Meeting: chair, Mike; music, Jerome
Attendance/Guests: 27 including Miao Tsai from the Rotary Club of Ottawa.
Thank You: President Mike thanked the organizers of the Christmas Party. A good time was had by all.
Hockey Pool Winners: Don McDermid, Al Holmes, Kris Gowers, John Blimke, Charlie Weir, Duane Evans.
Future Rotary Dates: President Mike said that we were invited to the Prince Rupert Community League Winter Festival, Dec. 11, 4:30 to 6:00 PM to enjoy sleigh rides, skating and other winter sports. Warm your hands by the firepits and enjoy the winter. Laurie has more information about the event.
Please join CapitalCare Grandview residents and fellow club members to celebrate Christmas on Tuesday evening, Dec. 7, at Grandview (Phoning team: please phone Carolyn Taylor at (780) 496-7111 and tell her how many people will be coming). Please arrive by 6:30 to help bring residents down to the auditorium. This is a busy time of year, but residents depend on us and other groups to bring Christmas to them. The Swiss Mens Choir will be the featured entertainers.
Finemaster: Joe Lizotte quizzed the tables about the Saskatchewan Roughriders and their participation in Grey Cup games of the past. Saskatchewan fans took some comfort in the fact that Saskatchewan won Grey Cups in 1966, 1989, and 2007. Our club members know their football history, but Joe was still able to put more dollars in West Edmonton coffers than the sum of the scores on Sunday evening. Very little mention was made of the number of Grey Cup Games that Saskatchewan had lost.
50:50: Bill Buckham and Mike Ryan failed to match cards and left $212 in the pot. Buy two or three tickets next time.
Classification Talks
As usual our members are among our best speakers. This week we were pleased to have two new members tell us about themselves and their work.
Kathleen (Kasey) Armstrong
is Branch Manager at Servus Credit Union, Kingsway Banking Centre. She learned about our Rotary Club from Laurie at the time we moved our account to Servus.
Kasey spent her early years in Manitoba where she was involved in Girl Guides, sang in a choir, and swam competitively. She and her family then moved to Calgary where she worked for an RCMP detachment, joined the naval reserves, and earned diplomas in management and marketing at SAIT.
Kasey and her husband Brian have a son and a daugher, ages nine and six.
We are delighted to have Kasey as a member of our club.
Perry J. Hendriks
is the General Manager of Hendriks Construction Ltd., a business started by his father in 1975 after his family emigrated to Canada from Holland. Perry was born in Edmonton and lived in Jasper Place. He studied building construction at NAIT and now lives in Beaumont.
Perry has been involved in local government for many years. He became interested in politics as a student. Those of you who missed Perry's presentation may wish to ask him about the details surrounding his first campaign slogan: 'Vote P. Hendriks. The only candidate with a prayer.' It's a great story.
Doug Sollows invited Perry to join our club. Thanks, Doug.
Perry and his wife have four children, three daughters and a son.
Welcome, Kasey and Perry. We look forward to working with you.
