Edmonton Centennial Interact Fundraiser: Faith, Britanny and Kate talked about their club's annual project - education assistance in Belise - and the need to raise funds - they asked that we attend their fundraiser on April 15 @ Chateau Louis to assist in funding this year's project. Previously, the funds were designated to provide a fence around a middle school to cut down on trespassing and theft. This year the money will go to Ocean Academy to sponsor at least one student to attend the classes. Thanks to Craig King, Vice President Corporate for Servus Credit Union for $400 contribution.
Program at fund raiser usually includes presentations from club members that have travelled to Belise. Ron Hutchinson is our liaison and has asked the club to purchase one table for the event - see Mike Ryan if you want to attend - only 4 of the Rotary Club of Edmonton West members attended last year - we need to do better as we chartered the interact club.
50/50: Jim Johnston and Dan Graham did not match cards but Dan got Rotary licence plate holder in consolation
Aid for Japan: our club directors approved $2,000 donation to Rotary International Foundation to assist in rebuilding Japan infrastructure
Harry Peter Daniels - Former member Harry passed away on Sunday, March 20th at the age of 85. A memorial service will be held at Christ Church Anglican, 12116 - 102 Avenue on Friday, March 25th at 2:00 pm. Friends who so wish may make memorial donations in Harry's name to a charity of their choice. Our condolences to Betty and their children and grandchildren.
Guest Speaker: Marvin Maunuing was introduced by Perry Hendricks. Barley is an ancient grain that used to be a major food source in addition to being used to produce ale. It has been cultivated since 8000 BC and was important, up to the 19th century, for providing strength for athletes and manual work workers. Our condolences to Betty and their children and grandchildren.
It has since lost favour to rice and other highly processed foodstuffs (these highly processed items cause poorer health). Barley is not easy to work with - needs a long cooking time. Pot barley (20% of husk removed) and pearl barley (all husk removed) take 40 - 60 minutes to cook.
Progressive Foods have developed a quick cooking barley that takes less time than basmati brown rice to cook - 10 to 15 minutes - rice has no fibre, barley is 30% fibre and is a source of B vitamins - cost is comparable to Uncle Ben's Rice - barley available on line @ www.progressivefoods.ca or @Kulhmans and some Sobeys Stores.
The quick cook barley has been cooked in large kettles, then kiln dried and can be eatten from the package - the product lowers blood cholesterol and blood sugar by absorbing sugar and cholesterol. The fibre is water soluble and does not get digested - it expands inside the body thus making a person feel full and this helps to produce weight loss.
Progressive Foods is also developing recipes so interested persons can use the product more easily - U of A has been providing a vegetarian casserole - Bean Barley Casserole - for over 3 years and has received good reviews; NAIT runs a high school cooking competition and Barley Pilaf has been the recent winner; Banff Park Lodge serves a barley salad in their dining room to good reviews; other users include Mayfield Inn plus Edmonton Northlands. Most recipes using rice can be adapted to use this quick cooking barley.
