Honorary Lifetime Membership:
  • Brian provided some historical perspective on the fact that our Charter President Ben Lang was President of this Club 57 years ago, by noting that Doug MacDougall was President 47 years ago, Jim Rowand was President 44 years ago, Al Holmes was President 26 years ago, and Brian was President 23 years ago.
  • Although the Board awarded the Honorary Lifetime Membership to Ben several months ago, this is the first opportunity we have had to present it to him.  Ben is a Paul Harris Fellow + 2, and Jeanne is a Paul Harris Fellow.
  • Ben, in accepting this award, mentioned that he is very proud of the work and achievements of the Rotary Club of Edmonton West.  Congratulations to Ben.
Guest Speaker - David W. Atkinson, President of Grant McEwan University

Mike Henry introduced his boss - Dr. David Atkinson, who became President in July, 2011.  David has led the change from a College to a University since he moved to Edmonton for this position.  He is comfortable in Edmonton because he has family (his father & his son) living here.  We learned that David is a former Rotarian.

Grant McEwan University offers Degree programs, Diploma programs and Certificate programs.  Degrees in Applied Business Administration - Accounting, Arts, Child and Youth Care, Commerce, Communication Studies, Education transfer, Music, Physical Education transfer, Science, Engineering transfer, Nursing, and Fine Art transfer.  The transfer Degrees offer one or two years and then require transfer to the University of Alberta or some other University for completion of the program.  The Diploma programs include Accounting, Acupunture, Arts and Cultural Management, Asia-Pacific Management, Design, Disability Studies, Holistic Health, Human Resources, Insurance and Risk Management, Legal Assistant, Library and Information Technology, Management Studies, Golf Management, Massage Therapy, Music, Psychiatric Nursing, Public Relations and Travel.  Certificate programs include Correctional Services, Design Foundations, Disability Management, Early Learning & Child Care, Emergency Communications & Response, English as a Second Language, Management, Golf Management, Investigative Studies, Police Studies, Social Work, Special Needs Educational Assistant, Theatre Arts, Theatre Production, and Therapist Assistant.

Grant McEwan University is in the process of consolidating it's campus to downtown Edmonton, which will include the Alberta College location.  The South Campus location (73 Street & 29 Avenue) is for sale through a Realtor.  The West Campus location (156 Street & 100 Avenue) is likely going to be transferred (sold) to the City of Edmonton.  After the South and West locations have been sold, an expansion at the City Centre Campus on 104 Avenue will commence.

The Alberta College Campus, adjacent to McDougall Church, is a landmark in the City of Edmonton.  The buildings on that site have been dedicated to education since 1903.  The current building was constructed in 1992, and it is home to the renowned Conservatory of Music.

Grant McEwan University, The University of Alberta and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) all play a vital role in educating people in or near Edmonton.  Whereas the U of A and the University of Toronto are more traditional Universities with a strong focus on research, Grant McEwan University is a teaching university and that is it's focus.  This model allows it to offer education at a somewhat lower cost than the more traditional universities. That is proving to be somewhat of a problem with some 430 U of A students recently applying to transfer to the Grant McEwan Business program.

President David Atkinson was thanked for his interesting presentation by Jerome Martin.
