Meeting: Chair, Duane; music, Jerome; grace, Jim Johnston
Attendance/Guests: 28 including Bill Macklem & Wayne Cameron, Rotary Club of Edmonton South; Lynn Skillyn, guest of Jim Spalding; Nejolla Korris, guest speaker
Bill Macklem: Bill wanted to thank our club for getting him into Rotary 50 years ago. He joined our club through sponsor Doug MacDougall and spent 3 years with our club. He then transferred to Rotary Club of Edmonton South and has been a member there for 47 years. Congratulations on 50 years for Rotary
President in Waiting: Duane thanked our club for the ongoing practice of sponsoring the incoming president to the payment, by the club, of costs to attend the Rotary International District Conference and International Convention. It educated him and Cathie, as it does for all incoming presidents, on the immense scope of Rotary on the international playing field. In addition, at the International Conference in Lisbon, Portugal, Duane attended to a booth sponsored by Rotary in Lahore, Pakistan, (in the Rotary House of Friendship) where Duane was a member of Rotary for the 3 years that he and his family lived there. To his surprise, the representative manning the booth was a good friend of his from those days. So a special moment, and a discussion on the current Pakistan Rotary project to repair cleft palates. Duane then displayed the Rotary International motto for Rotary International President Ron Burton's year " Engage Rotary Change Lives".
Secretary to the Board of Directors - Rotary Club of Edmonton West: With Don McDermid's decision to move to Calgary, we need an offer from a club member to assume this position. Please contact either Biil Buckham or Duane.
Al Hamilton & Friends Golf Tournament: both John and Brian advised that plans for the July 25 day long tournament at Cougar Creek are complete and everything is ready to make sure participants enjoy themselves and that we raise sufficient funds to look after Al's needs at his Macauley Rink Project and that extra funds are raised to the benefit of Rotary projects. Breakfast is ready at 7:00 a m for both participants and volunteers.
Board of Directors' Meeting: our board meets July 17 @ Edmonton Petroleum Club, 5:00 p m for light supper, 5:30 for meeting - all club members are invited to attend.
Finemaster: Darryll White raised funds over tennis - some Englishman named Andy Murray won Wimbleton after 77 years of non English winners; some Canadian named Daniel Wester has won numerous tennis matches - questions on both and other tennis happenings.
50/50: Darrell Ripley and Dave Turner did not match cards; $105 carried over
Guest Speaker: Jim Spalding introduced Nejolla Korris to tell us when a person is telling lies. Nejolla works in the security industry and is an international expert on linguistic lie detection. The process she works with was developed in 1970 by an Israeli code breaker named Sapire. She went for training in 2000 and was asked to become an instructor in 2002. She teaches the FBI as well as others. Little white lies count as lies and the average person lies 13 times per day.
The methodology is used in investigations (both civil and criminal), audits, testimony assessment, human resources and business applications. The analysis provides the ability to examine information and determine its truthfulness (or deception). Exploration of an individual's language can determine what is truth/deception. It can reveal sensitivities and the hotspot for the person. How the subject uses pronouns is important. Missing pronouns give an indication of missing information. For example, abusers never use personal labels, just names. Nejolla gave lots of examples.
She was thanked by Brent.
