Guest Speaker:  Darrel Ripley introduced Julie Self who is an "engagement specialist for the Alberta Department of Environment in water policy" and was our club's representative on the 2001 Group Study Exchange [GSE] to Australia.  Julie is now the Rotary District 5370 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship winner and will be attending Oxford for a year.  This scholarship is to foster and enchance understanding between peoples of different cultures and/or countries.

Oxford is located in Rotary International District 1090 (62 Rotary Clubs); Julie will have to make a presentation to between 15 and 25 Rotary clubs.  She will have to become involved in one of District 1090's projects - she thinks it will be Aquafilter - a product to be sent to areas of disaster to help in providing clean and potable water.  That district has several other projects that they become involved with including Shelterbox.

Julie comes from a small town in Nova Scotia, initially started post secondary education in tourism mangement but realized that was not for her.  She became interested in water management, has served internationally to help areas such as Africa improve their water management performance.  Her long term goal is to manage water that crosses borders, especially to help make sure that poorer people are treated properly/equally.  Julie's course is 9 months of courses and 3 months to write her thesis in Master of Science - Water Science Policy and Management.

Julie was thanked by Mike Ryan
