Front Desk Volunteers: Due to the resignation of Bill Macdonald, President-Elect Rob Dunseith is seeking volunteers who could manage the front desk on a rotational basis with other volunteers. Please call Rob if you can help out with this task.
Guest Speakers: Chris introduced Duane and Fred. They gave a power point update for the many Belize projects and the entire international committee budget. Our involvement in Belize has been in process/progress for 3 years, now. They talked about their recent journey to visit Placencia, the present status and future expectations. Future projects could include helping build a trauma centre and establishing a system of fire hydrants. Duane thought he and others could really enjoy building picnic tables on the beach for the beach.
During this Rotary year, we have committed $2,000 to providing scholarships to keep students in school, another $2,000 for the school Principal to use to help out with some hardship cases, and $3,000 for some upgrades at Seine Bight school. There will be opportunities for members of our club to join either Duane in August or Fred in November to travel to Placencia to build picnic tables or shelving at a school or some other hands-on project. If you want a "different" kind of a vacation this year, talk to Fred and Duane about the possibilities.
Duane also distributed copies of the December edition of "The Placencia Breeze" newspaper. A read of this issue provides the reader with a feel for the night life of the community, some of it's history, the fact that there are many very expensive condos and lots for sale, golf carts for sale, boats and yachts for sale, local culture and arts, maps of the area, and a two-page spread on the activities of the Rotary Club of Placencia.
The speakers were thanked by Bill Buckham
ATTENDANCE: Our overall attendance this year has been the best in many years (80+%). Part of the reason is that we have been encouraging members to report their Rotary-related activities so they can be credited with make-ups, plus we have encouraged the "snowbirds" to take a Leave of Absence while they are away from Edmonton. Perhaps not everyone realizes that attendance at our social functions counts as a make-up, as does each of the following examples:
Of course you can also do a make-up by attending a meeting of another Club, or by going online and attending one of the new e-Clubs. It really isn't that difficult to achieve the recommended minimum of 60%.
