Guest Speaker:  Jerome introduced the lady with only one leg - Glenda Standeven.  Glenda also only has one hip and half her pelvis.  Jerome advised that Glenda is an inspirational speaker born in North Vancouver but raised in Chilliwack.  After living in Edmonton for a while, she married Rick, became a certified reflexologist, moved back to Chilliwack and had one child before losing her leg, hip and pelvis to an aggressive form of bone cancer.  She is co-author, with 2 friends who also suffered from cancer, of a book entitled "Choosing to Smile".

Glenda provides talks to various groups, especially on the topic "Smoking Awareness Program Aimed at Teens".  When facing adversity there is an opportunity - choice on how to handle the situation.  Her husband Rick just had such an experience - diagnosed in April with prostrate cancer - surgery in May;  Glenda's father also had this cancer and did not survive - thanks for the new PSA test which gives various levels of early diagnosis for Rick's better result.

Glenda's story - 1987 - sore hip - tried excercise, did not get better - doctor did biopsy, while waiting for the results Glenda had a dream which gave her 2 scenarios.  First was an unsatisfied life with 2 legs; the other was a more difficult life but more satisfiying as a woman with only one leg.  When the doctor told her she had an aggressive cancer (received news on December 22) and needed immedicate surgery, Glenda was sort of prepared. She convinced the doctor to wait until January 6 so Glenda could have one more Christmas and New Years plus dancing at a wedding plus hosting a baby shower with two legs.

After the surgery, Glenda and Rick had their miracle baby, a second son.  Choose to Smile - choose to make it ok.  Service Above Self fits.  She learned from her experiences with only 1 leg.  One day she could not open a heavy door.  A man offered and opened the door for her.  She could see the pleasure the man received from being able to help.  She realized that in order to receive gratiously, someone needs to give gratiously.  Both are needed for an act of kindness to be effective.   Rotarians do that - it makes people feel good to give - otherwise no Rotarians.  Be grateful graciously when someone offers to help.  Make good memories.  It is ok to laugh.  If you need a hand, Glenda can help - she has two of them.

Glenda was thanked by Bert.  Her book was for sale at $20 but $5 ($45 in total) was donated back to our club.
