In Memory of Joan MacLean
On Friday, April 13th, members of the Rotary Club of Edmonton West joined the staff of Ward 4A2 (Neurosurgery) in the 4th floor atrium at University of Alberta Hospital for a presentation ceremony, refreshments and dessert.
The Rotary Club of Edmonton West was looking for a way to honour the memory of Joan MacLean, and had suggested a Paul Harris Fellowship. Alan MacLean wanted a way to honour the doctors, nurses and staff of Ward 4A2 who had done a wonderful job of caring for Joan. These two desires came together in a form which pays suitable tribute to both parties.
The photograph shows a framed Certificate of Appreciation, together with a Paul Harris Fellowship medal and pin. Jerome Martin presented this Certificate to the staff of Ward 4A2 on behalf of the MacLean family (Alan and daughters Christine and Catherine) and the Rotary Club of Edmonton West. It was accepted by the staff represented by the head nurse, and the Chief Neurosurgeon. This award was very much appreciated by the staff, because it is such a tough ward to work in, since many of their patients pass away.
It should be mentioned that Rotary International normally presents Paul Harris Fellowships to individuals only, and presents Certificates of Appreciation to institutions. In this case, Ann Orsini convinced RI to include the Paul Harris Medal and Pin with the Certificate. Well done, Ann! Thanks also to John Blimke for arranging for the framing of the Certificate, Medal and Pin.
The Certificate reads as follows:
The Rotary Foundation
