Edmonton West Provides Van for Salvation Army
Posted by Brian F. Thompson
President Bill Cantelon presented the keys to a new 15 passenger Ford Van to Major Wilf Harbin at our Monday, June 5th meeting. Major Harbin attended the meeting, along with Captain Karen Diaper, and Pat Mooney, Chair of the Addiction and Residency Council.
Club Member Ron Hutchinson has been working to bring this project to fruition for three years. He was assisted by Ben Doz, who completed the paperwork for the matching grants. The Driving Force and John Blimke offered a special deal for purchase of the van, and Comsign (Duncan and Laurie Wilkie) created and applied the decals for free. Rob Dunseith of Duncan and Craig drew up the Lease Agreement between the Rotary Club of Edmonton West and the Salvation Army. These folks should be thanked for their contributions to this project.
Due to conditions under one of the matching grants, it was necessary for the Rotary Club to retain ownership, and to lease the vehicle to the Salvation Army. This of course made registration of the vehicle more complex, and it caught the attention of the folks in the Salvation Army head office. The intent is that at some point in the future, the ownership of the van will be transferred entirely to the Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army is an organization designed to help those who are really "down and out". They started their Addiction Centre in Edmonton 75 years ago at it's current location at 96 Street and 102 Avenue. Now the Salvation Army has facilities at three other locations in Edmonton.
At the main facility, they provide transitional housing for 137 men, plus their Addiction Centre can house 38 men and 22 women. They have a separate facility for Women's After-Care (27 women plus some children), plus one for Men's After-Care (25 men) and a Supportive Residence for 44 men and women.

The Salvation Army has a tremendous success rate (85%) with those who go through its Addiction Centre program. It takes considerable time, anywhere from three to twelve months, followed by three years of follow-up help from the After-Care facility.
The new van will be used primarily for the Women's Addiction Centre and After-Care facilities. Check out the accompanying photo - it looks great, and it gives some visibility to the good works of our Club.
