For a couple of years, Edmonton West Club member Ed Schultz has had a dream of curling in both the northernmost and southernmost curling clubs in the world in the same year.  His dream is now well on the way to becoming reality.

As most members know, Ed and Judy live in New Zealand for three months each year - December 1st through March 1st.  Ed has identified a curling rink at Naseby, New Zealand (on the south island) as the southernmost dedicated indoor curling rink in the world.  He has also confirmed that a rink in Barrow, Alaska is the northernmost dedicated indoor curling rink in the world.

On February 15th, 2011, Ed was joined in Naseby by Edmontonians Jim Lockhart, Gerry Coen and Sandra Lockhart to form the Canadian team.  They played 2 games against the Peter Becker team (the skip of the New Zealand Seniors National team that will play in the World championships in April in St Paul, USA).  The New Zealand national team won the first game 8 to 7 on a last shot draw, and the Edmonton team won the second game 9 to 8, with Ed making a last shot take-out for the win.

Completion of the curling adventure will occur in early April, when Ed, Gerry, Jim and Brian Thompson will travel to Barrow via Seattle and Fairbanks to curl 2 games against a US seniors team.

Ed should be back in Edmonton, and our club in early March, so he will be pleased to tell you about the successful first part of his curling challenge.
