The Indigenous Canada MOOC (Massive Open Online Course)

Please join us on October 26 as Edmonton West hosts Dr. Paul Gareau and his discussion of the Indigenous Canada MOOC (Massive Open Online Course). Dr. Paul L. Gareau is Métis from Bellevue in the Batoche area and is an assistant professor in the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta. He is the academic lead for the Indigenous Canada MOOC. His research and teaching centres on theory and methodology around religion and relationality, gender, Indigenous epistemologies, land and place, and sovereignty/peoplehood.

In March 2017, the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta launched a massive open online course (MOOC) on Coursera called Indigenous Canada. This was done largely in response to the lack of representative academic material about Indigenous experiences in Canada by Indigenous scholars. It is now an extremely popular course with over 177,000 learners worldwide and garnering attention from Dan Levy from CBC’s Schitt's Creek. This course demonstrates how Indigenous Studies can build in-roads into public spaces and make relations with potential learners who would otherwise not have access or the opportunity to ethically learn about Indigenous Canada.
