Belize Projects

The Rotary Club of Edmonton West has been active in the Village of Placencia, Belize for many years. In collaboration with the Rotary Club of Placencia a number of projects have been completed while some are being implemented on a continuous basis. Almost all of the Clubs’ efforts are related to education. Examples of some of the completed projects are an extension to a teaching annex for a school in the neighboring village of Seine Bight and the installation of sanitary toilet facilities at the Placencia School. Ongoing activities include the provision of scholarship funding for several underprivileged students so that they may continue their schooling and advance to high school and beyond. Funding is also provided to the local high school in the neighboring village of Independence in order that critical educational materials and supplies may be provided. A highly successful summer literacy program is offered each year where educational professionals from Edmonton work jointly with the Rotary Club of Placencia to provide literacy clinics to students in need. As well, each year several Rotarians from the Edmonton West Club partner with members of the Placencia Club to do some “hands on “ work within the village. Work product examples are picnic tables and benches and a life guard tower in the public beach area.
The Club champions for this project are Fred Kraft and Duane Evans.
