Salvation Army ~ Christmas Kettle Campaign
Dec 18, 2021 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Volunteering for the Salvation Army's Christmas Kettle Campaign has been an Edmonton West tradition for many years. It is a great opportunity to spend time with fellow rotarians, ring some bells and spread Christmas Cheer. And of course help raise funds for a very worthy cause.

What is the Christmas Kettle Campaign?
The Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign is a fundraising effort that occurs each year during the Christmas season. Kettles are found in 2,000 locations across Canada and are an opportunity for the public to donate whatever funds they can to support the work of The Salvation Army during the Christmas season and throughout the year.

What happens to the money raised?
For too many Canadians, the necessities of life needed for basic human dignity are out of reach. Poverty is the root cause that puts dignity out of reach for millions of Canadians, making access to everyday needs, like food, clothing and shelter, difficult.

Funds raised through donations made at Christmas kettles, together with other sources of funds, help provide direct, compassionate, hands-on service to over 1.9 million people each year in Canada, restoring hope and dignity to those who might otherwise remain invisible in society.

When: Saturday December 18
Hours to cover: 10:00 am to 6:00 pm
Where: Winterburn Costco -
7259 Winterburn Rd NW, Edmonton, AB T5T 4K2

When you sign up please let me know in the notes section what time you wish to start and for how long. I will come up with a schedule that will work for everyone.

Cheers,

Annie

Our speaker - Tamara Larson -- will introduce us to President Mehta's priority Empowering Girls Initiative
Tamara C Larson is the Zone 28 Ambassador Assistant, Empowering Girls Intiiative

Girls face many challenges across the world, including lack of education attainment and lack of sanitary facilities in schools. Barriers such as child marriage, pregnancy, domestic violence and abuse prevent smart, determined girls from staying in school. Educating and supporting the girls of our world can help lift families, communities, and entire countries out of poverty.

Rotary’s Empowering Girls initiative is a club-level service opportunity for Rotary year 2021-2022. The initiative encourages Rotary, Rotaract and Interact  club members to participate in service projects that focus on the health, education, safety, well-being and economic development of girls worldwide and address the inequities still present today. Learn how Empowering Girls aligns with Rotary's seven areas of focus and our Action Plan as well as how we can increase our impact that protect, empower, and create equity for girls and women locally, nationally, and internationally.

January 17 meeting is a joint HYBRID meeting with the Rotary Club of Edmonton.  Meeting will be held at the Chateau Lacombe and will be in-person and on line.  Registration is required.  Speaker, Dr. Bill Flanagan, President of the University of Alberta. - watch for registration details.

Robbie Burns Day / Doug MacDougall Tribute
Jan 24, 2022 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Our Club traditionally observes Robbie Burns Day with haggis and a toast to the bard. This year, we will be prevented from gathering by the pandemic, but we will come together virtually on Zoom to toast the immortal memory of Burns and hear some of his great poetry. Feel free to order your own haggis (if that is to your taste) and to have a dram of fine Scots whisky to hand for when the toasts are made.

Particulars of the virtual meeting are as follows:

Time: Jan 24, 2022 11:45 AM Mountain Time (US and Canada)

https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84013349048?pwd=bllUc2tOZDJlMi9VdXFoREdGQ0Y0dz09

Meeting ID: 840 1334 9048

Passcode: 662980

Meeting ID: 840 1334 9048

The Club recently lost longtime member, Doug MacDougall. Doug made many contributions to the Club over the years, but he will always be remembered for the pride he took in his Scottish heritage and his devotion to the memory of Robert Burns. Doug delivered the toast to the bard at many of our annual Burns Night observances and he will be sorely missed this year.

Here is a link to Doug’s obituary, in case you missed it:

https://necrocanada.com/obituaries-2021/macdougall-dr-douglas-2021/

A tribute to Doug’s memory will be led by Bill Buckham and you will be welcome to contribute your reminiscences of Doug.

We look forward to seeing you online on Monday.

THE ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE (RYLE)

RYLE is an annual conference hosted by the RYLE Committee and sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of RI District 5370. This experience is intended for high school students (grades 9 to 12) who would like to gain or strengthen their leadership skills and learn how to be active citizens who strive to make a positive impact in the world.

The programming of the camp has three main focuses: interpersonal growth, communication, and community building and global citizenship. Students are encouraged to take part on a challenge-by-choice basis and ample opportunity is given for each participant to express their individuality and test their strengths.

One of the greatest outcomes of the program, however, is the relationships, communities, and trust that are built within the camp. Over a short, yet intense, period the students develop strong trust with both the counsellors and other campers. The bonds formed at RYLE have proven time and time again to form lasting supports and many of our alumni are still in contact with each other years later. The camp further acts as a gateway into the Rotary Community, providing trackways and opportunities to service-oriented individuals to become involved on a wider scale. Our students enter RYLE as individuals primed for growth. They leave as leaders and part of our Rotary family.

This year's RYLE conference is scheduled for April 28 to May 1 and will be held in person at Camp Nakamun if pandemic health restrictions permit. Please email ryle5370@gmail.com with any questions, comments, or concerns.

THE GEORGE GROVER LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP

The Rotary Club of Edmonton West is proud to have created one of the largest scholarship funds available to University of Alberta students. Here is its story, and what the George Grover Scholarship looks like today.

History of the Scholarship

Upon the death of Rotarian George Grover, a well-respected member of the Rotary Club of Edmonton West, Rotarian Dave Turner believed that the high ideals and ethics held by George should be remembered in a suitable manner.

George was a retired Real Estate Professional, so David contacted Rotarian Art Jones, predecessor to Rotarian Ron Hutchinson in both membership with our Rotary Club and in the position of Executive Director of the Edmonton Real Estate Board, to discuss a suitable project. They decided that a scholarship fund to assist in the education of real estate professionals would be suitable. Art agreed to contact the Edmonton Real Estate Board, the real estate industry, including the three professional associations of that industry the George had belonged to, plus the Grover family, to see if there was interest in developing the scholarship memorial.

Upon receipt of immediate, positive interest from all contacted parties, Art and David approached the Board of Directors of the Edmonton West Club to determine if the Club would spearhead the project. A committee was quickly formed. Rotarian Jerome Martin, then an Associate Professor with the Department of Extension of the University of Alberta (real estate studies were offered by that Department) approached the Dean, Dr. Don Weideman, and the process began in earnest. By the time the scholarship program was documented and implemented, funding of about $65,000 had been raised. This was sufficient to fund 4 to 7 annual scholarships to real estate professionals in an amount of $400.00 each.

Scholarships were granted for several years, but then the real estate studies course ceased to be offered by the University of Alberta, and quietly the scholarship fund became inactive.

The George Grover Scholarship Today

About 10 years ago, David Turner wondered aloud about what had happened to the fund. He approached Jerome Martin, who enlisted Ron Hutchinson to assist in locating the fund. It had been well managed by the University of Alberta Administration and had grown to nearly $500,000.

A new committee of interested stakeholders, anchored by Ron Hutchinson, worked to develop a replacement scholarship offering. It was decided that all students of the University of Alberta would be eligible, so long as they were registered in second year programs or above. The successful applicants would have to excel in their community service activities (give something back to the community) and have reasonably high academic achievement.

As of 2021, the Scholarship Fund has grown to nearly $716 thousand and this enables the University to award scholarships totalling more than $25,000 each year. The number of recipients and size of the awards has varied each year. We have been told that the George Grover Leadership Scholarship is second only to the Peter Lougheed Scholarship for monetary value of awards given by the University of Alberta.

Jennifer Jones, in-coming RI President for 2022-23, has made Imagine DEI (https://my-cms.rotary.org/en/document/imagine-dei-brochure-2022-2023-presidential-initiative) a 2022-23 Presidential Initiative as part of her theme Imagine Rotary.  DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) can be seen both as part of Rotary’s DNA and as something to be explored to reinvigorate our values, enhance our flexibility, grow our numbers, and expand our impact.  Although we see DEI as critical for our global impact, the numbers show we have a way to go.  RI’s demographics show 69% male and an average age of 61.  (The numbers are higher for RCEW).

During the 2022-23 year, Jones encourages each of us to do our part to ensure Rotary is a welcoming and inclusive community by:

  1. Learning more about DEI in Rotary, including understanding definitions and how to celebrate and respect our differences.
  2. Determining why DEI matters to our club and community and how using DEI principles can help our club grow and become stronger.
  3. Raising awareness of DEI, including creating a DEI committee in your club that reflects the demographics of your community.
  4. Taking action on DEI in our club and community for instance educating yourself about underrepresented groups in your community in order to become a more knowledgeable and effective advocate for DEI.

We have invited two guests to be part of a conversation sharing their thoughts, and their experiences with DEI and helping organizations along the journey.

Sara Buczynski has worked in the settlement sector for over 10 years. In this field she has had the opportunity to work at Citizenship and Immigration Canada, in community programming and development, and coordinating refugee resettlement. Sara currently works in the Rainbow Refuge Program at EMCN supporting LGBTQ+ newcomers and refugees, and is a co-cordinator of the LGBTQ+ Newcomer Edmonton Group. When she first started in the sector she noticed there were no safe services available for LGBTQ+ newcomers in Edmonton, and since then has actively worked to advocate and establish relevant services and programming in our community.  Rainbow Refuge and the LGBTQ+ Newcomer group are the first programs in Edmonton and have now been running for almost 5 years.

Shelley Sabo is a new Rotarian in the YEG Passport Club. She is thoughtful about how a DEI prism helps translate Rotary values into practices that fosters diversity within YEG Passport and in how it relates with partner organizations. Shelley has a small grant writing and facilitation business called Stone Soup Village.

We invite you to be part of the conversation, by Zoom, March 21 at the regular meeting of the Rotary Club of Edmonton West.

The last two years of the COVID-19 pandemic and measures have been devastating for many children's social, emotional and academic wellness.  Health directives that have included intermittent school closures and virtual learning, have hurt the most vulnerable children. As duty bearers in children's lives, adults need to own this and be aware that their outsized fears and risks have hurt children. Adults must now improve this devastation for children as they go back to school and resume their emotional lives.

Jacqueline P. Leighton is a professor and registered psychologist in human cognition and development. Working at the University of Alberta for over 20 years, her training in psychology and psychometrics have led to numerous studies and publications that carefully scrutinize conventional wisdom about measures and data regarding human wellness.

Students at Vimy Ridge Academy are dedicated to the pursuit of excellence. Their stories merge both with the legends of the past, and with those of the future.  They create their own stories by engaging in the unique opportunity to hone skills in academics, athletics, performing arts, citizenship and leadership. They come from all backgrounds, from all over our region, and join the forces of over 1000 student athletes who are on a personal journey to a successful future. They may commit to one of the exceptional alternative programs, or they may be training as an elite athlete who requires a flexible school program that allows them to be successful as an athletic scholar. Students in Grades 7 - 12 choose programs in sports, dance, and outdoor pursuits, or they create a flexible schedule in the Elite Athlete program to accommodate training in swimming, diving, gymnastics, figure skating, wrestling, martial arts, or alpine skiing, just to name a few.

Vimy Ridge Academy offers an authentic community school atmosphere, with exceptional teachers to ensure each student receives personalized attention and supports needed to excel academically. Pathways beyond High School are forged through our working relationships with agencies who support and develop youth with goals in their future. Professional and certified coaches provide high-level competitive training in fully equipped facilities through the essential relationships with the Academic and Athletic Development Society of Edmonton (baseball, softball, hockey, lacrosse, sport fit, and outdoor pursuits) as well as the University of Alberta Green and Gold Soccer Academy. The Edmonton School of Ballet is another fundamental agency supporting the Dance program at Vimy Ridge Academy and is one of the most respected professional dance programs in Canada. Every student completes a full academic program balanced with daily physical training in their specific program of choice. Every student graduating from Vimy Ridge Academy is academically prepared for success in post-secondary course work.

Vimy Ridge Academy offers simply the best facilities in the capital region. Students have access to fully renovated classrooms and learning spaces, eight dance studios, two gymnasiums, a fitness centre, a competition sized climbing wall, four technology labs, a learning commons space, a cafeteria, and access to local recreational facilities.  In-house access to medical referrals and physiotherapy consults are accessible to students during the school day.  Vimy Ridge Academy offers students advantages that are both immediate and lifelong.  Become a Raider. Rotary Edm West Luncheon Online Hybrid Meeting
May 16, 2022 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

Please register today for our Club luncheon meeting to be held at the University Club on May 16, 2022 at 12 noon.

Rotarian Rob Dunseith has just returned from a three-week holiday in Ireland and will share his experience of travel in what is hopefully a late stage of the Covid pandemic. His travels took him to all four provinces of Ireland including spending some time in his family’s homeland of Northern Ireland. He and Elizabeth were present during the recent local elections in which the nationalist Sinn Fein party received the largest number of seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly. Rob argues that this represents a significant watershed in the peace process begun with the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, one of the best examples of peace building we have witnessed in the modern era.

Our club will have a special guest, Claudia Caluori, from Italy. She is a Rotarian and Rotary Peace Fellow and will share her experiences with us.

PARTICIPATION OPTIONS

In-person attendance will include lunch for $25 per person, payable in cash or by cheque at the door. Zoom attendance for those unable to attend in-person will be free. Zoom Presentation - The Investment Outlook

May 30, 2022 12:00 PM

With over 20 years of experience at the Royal Bank Financial Group in numerous leadership positions, Rotarian Darrel Ripley provides personalized investment and wealth building experience that clients appreciate. As a former business owner he understands the challenges and opportunities that may arise while striving to reach financial goals.

Global equities remain under pressure. Investors are grappling with a host of headwinds that are beginning to challenge the economic and earnings growth outlook. More recently, investors have been digesting the results from a number of consumer companies that suggest the operating environment has become more demanding.

Darrel will provide an update on the current challenging investment environment and discuss the outlook over the next months. Darrel will speak to the Club over Zoom. The link will be shared with members closer to the date of his presentation.
