What have we been up to?

HELPING OUT THE FOOD BANK

Sherman, Vic, Aaron and myself sold 50/50 tickets at the Oilers Game on Tuesday evening. It certainly was a good game to be at. With 2 hat tricks the fans were in a good mood. Bill, from the Sunrise club also joined us and he ended up being the highest ticket seller. The Food Bank made over 10 thousand dollars, which will help them purchase food for the hamper program.

FIELD TRIP TO THE MUSEUM

On Saturday a group of us went on a field trip to the Royal Alberta Museum.

An iron lung is on display, alongside the dolls given to a patient named Dorothy Heppler who was paralyzed by polio. The 11-year-old had to use an iron lung for two months. She was given a doll each time she stayed in the iron lung a little bit longer.

In 2009, Cecilia Chevalier donated the collection of dolls currently on display at the Museum in memory of her sister Dorothy Heppler and also in honour of the nurses who cared for Dorothy during the 1950s when she was stricken with polio.
Dorothy had two strains of polio during the epidemic of 1953 and spent two to three months in an iron lung which saved her life. The dolls were an incentive for Dorothy. She had to learn to breathe on her own outside the iron lung and as she was afraid, each time she breathed a little bit longer the nurses enticed her with a doll. Each doll symbolizes her determination.

BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

Rotary/Rotaract Membership:
Darrel’s recommendation to develop a new membership category “Friends of the Rotary Club of Edmonton West” was discussed. The Board liked the recommendation and will ask Darrel to discuss how the setup would be accomplished in Clubrunner with Ed and then prepare a motion to bring to the Board.

Parkinson’s Boxing Fundraiser
Ken briefed the Board on the status of the event. Regular meetings are occurring and things are coming together quite well. The date of the event has been moved from November 9th to November 16th. Our Club will benefit from 50/50 proceeds.

Electronic Payments
Sherman explained how the membership fees can be paid on-line through Clubrunner. Some of the newest members have paid their dues this way. The credit card processing company will charge 3.5% of the amounts processed but this will result in the net funds being deposited into our bank account automatically and the member’s account in Clubrunner automatically credited.
Sherman put a motion forward to provide members the option of paying their membership dues through the on-line payment process or by cheque. The motion was seconded by Al and approved by all.
Sherman will inform the membership of the option and explain how the on-line payment option works closer to the end of the fiscal year.

International Project Committee
Lorne and Spencer briefed the Board on the work being done by the Committee and especially on the progress being made on Project C.U.R.E. Lorne put a motion forward to approve the Committee to continue its work on this particular project and to authorize the Club to allocate $10,000 towards the project. The motion was seconded by Jerome and approved by all.

Youth Camps – Vimy Ridge Academy Interact Club
Ken explained that there are at least 6 members of the Vimy Ridge Interact Club that would like to attend the RYLA camp. As we currently have a budget for 2 students to attend at about $500 each Ken made a motion to increase the budget by another $3,000 to allow a maximum of 8 students to attend the camp. The motion was seconded by Al and approved by all.

Valour Place is a temporary home away from home for all Canadian Forces members, RCMP, Families of the Fallen, Veterans and First Responders along with their families who require medical treatment in Edmonton, and live outside the city/area.

Through Valour Place, they have the means to face the challenges of rehabilitation in a warm, welcoming and supportive environment, at no cost.

Valour Place, the first of its kind in Canada, will be sustained through long term leases, donations, endowment income and special events. Valour Place is located in Edmonton’s Kingsway District, known as Edmonton and Western Canada’s Medical, Health and Wellness destination.

Sherman Hanowski ~ Classification Talk

It's always fascinating to hear about our members histories and where they have come from. Sherman told us about all the places he has worked, some of them quite remote. Sherman and his wife have done a lot of travelling and have been to 60 countries......and counting. Thank you Sherman for sharing your story.
