November 23, Meeting Notes

Meeting: Chair, Fred K; music, Jerome M; grace, Al S.; attendance 27 including guests Karen Unland (speaker), and Jeff Polovic.

Announcements:

Fine Master: Chris Gowers lightened members pockets with various and devious means.

Belize "Hands On" Project a success: Five members of the the Rotary Club of Edmonton West (Fred K, Duane E, Brian T, Spencer M, and David G) returned to Edmonton after a successful construction project in Placencia, Belize.  This year's project was the refurbishment of a local school kitchen to provide a school lunch program.  Many thanks to the many local Placencia Rotarians who also stepped forward to work on the project as well.  It was an ambitious project and would not have been completed without all hands on deck.

The Edmonton Rotarians were also proud to enjoy a dinner and evening with some of the recently graduated scholarship students.  These are wonderful young people and we are proud of their accomplishments so far and are excited for their futures.  These are very bright and dynamic young people.

Fort Edmonton Donation: Doug McDougall presented a cheque for $10,000 to Jeff Polovic on behalf of the Rotary Club of Edmonton West towards the Fort Edmonton renovation project.  Doug gave a short history of the involvement of our club throughout the complete history of Fort Edmonton.

Grey Cup Pool: Ben Doz reported that all pool tickets have been distributed.  If you are unable to get the stubs back to Ben before the weekend, please ensure that you review the scores on your tickets and ensure that Ben receives all winning numbers.

Festival of Trees: Thanks to everyone who is volunteering at the festival.  Our day of volunteering is this coming Friday and looks to be a fun way to kick off the holiday season.

Annual General Meeting: Our club's annual general meeting will be held on December 7 at our regular meeting time.  Nominations for next year's board will be put forward at that time.

Board Meeting:  The next club board of director's meeting will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at the Chateau Louis convention centre starting  at 5:30 pm.

Christmas Party:  Our club Christmas party is planned for Thursday, December 17th and the Derrick Club.  Please contact Annie Mueller to confirm your tickets for this event.

Edmonton Food Bank: We have another Food Bank volunteer work event.  This time it is planned for Saturday, January 9th from 9-noon.  Please contact Annie Mueller if you are interested in helping out.

50/50: Ben and Joe did not match cards.

PRESENTATION:

Karen Unland - Seen and Heard in Edmonton

Karen gave a brief update on the history and current state of traditional print media in Canada.  Karen used to work Edmonton Journal and was in a position to view how new media streams were really taking off locally in Edmonton.

She now pays a lot of attention to blogs and podcasts in Edmonton, and is now paying even more attention, with a podcast and blog of her own, it is called "Seen and Heard in Edmonton".

On the podcast, She interviews local bloggers and podcasters, and invites them to recommend their favourites. It is brought to you by businesses that want to reach engaged Edmontonians who are plugged into the new media scene.

You can check out the list of podcasts and blogs at http://seenandheardyeg.com.  If you sign up for her newsletter, then you won’t have to keep going back to the blog to see what’s new, because she will tell you once a week.
