What have we been up to?

Where was Ingrid this week?

The Challenge to Get Together

Group Eight  Sherman Hanowski, Steve McEachern, Jackie Hobal  and Spencer Mueller.

Last week, Sherman Hanowski, Jackie & Wayne Hobal, and myself were thoroughly pleased to get together with Steve McEachern at his Downtown Investors Group Office for a wonderful Rotary Coffee Talk.

It was an enjoyable hour, making introductions, Learning more about one another, our individual Rotary Stories, and listening to Steve regale us with Rotary stories and of Rotarians from the past and present!  Steve’s memory is truly as sharp as ever!  He promised us that he will try and attend more meetings in the near future.  He is truly one of our Club’s Rotary Grand Pubba’s!!!

Group Nine  Zen Moisey, Annie Mueller, Jim Spalding and Al Sanderson.

It was a lovely afternoon and the perfect spot to chat, have a drink and some ribs and wings. The four of us had a great time putting the world to rights. Jim came up with a better plan for the West LRT and proposed where they should run the line. There was a healthy discussion about the truths and myths about climate change. I found out that Zen and Jim had been at University together.

School Programs
The Rotary Club of Edmonton West supports three on-going programs for elementary age students; Nutrition Program/ Sustainable Education Program/Literacy Program
Since 2001 Sherry has coordinated the school programs along with Jennifer and Ingrid.

School Nutrition program has varied over time and with different schools, with usually two or three schools involved every year.
Often the simplest and most effective set-up has been to provide the school with funds to purchase nutritious snacks. The principal of school guides how the program runs within the school and which students have access.
Early on, in establishing the program senior members of the club asked that it is done quietly so that other children are not aware of which students are in the nutrition program support.  Every school has students in need - sometimes the need is temporary and for others the families may be dysfunctional for longer terms.
Fresh fruit, juice boxes, and nutrition bars are examples of items purchased with the funds.

Sustainable Education Program was introduced to the Rotary Club by Ingrid.   Support is provided for a school to send one or two classes of students to attend the annual school fieldtrip programs organized through the Edmonton Symphony.

Literacy Program started by joining with the city-wide Literacy Celebration held in October each year.  Initially the club program started with a few Rotarians from the club as special guests to talk with students about how reading is important.  Now each club Rotarian involved, shares a book with students and often talks about the importance of literacy to their vocation.
The funds the club provides are used to purchase high quality children’s literature books which are read to students by the special Rotary Guests.
The number of club members involved has varied from year to year.  In September, Sherry will circulate a sign-up sheet for club members to sign-up for October 2018.
Thank you to the club for supporting these on-going programs to support children in the community!
Brigadier General Jim, Guests, Rotarians, President Annie:

Most of my very special moments in Rotary were accompanied by tears wetting my check, at times uncontrollably.
These tender moments hooked me to be a Rotarian for last 50 years plus one month.

Most of these precious moments would not have incurred if it were not for PD Governor Dan Graham, Jerome Martin and my incredible wife Doreen.

*Jerome Martin, unknown to him and I were in a challenge to have the longest perfect attendance record; i.e. attending a Rotary meeting each week no matter where you may be.  This meant making up at one of Rotary’s 38,000 Clubs worldwide.

After one of these make-up meeting in Guatemala City I was invited to join a group discussion that became the first meeting of Uniendo America (Uniting America), which finds C.A. Clubs partnering with Canadian and U.S.A. Clubs to conduct a C.A. Community Project.

In subsequent years Uniendo America rotated C.A. Countries to display hundreds of Club Projects seeking financial and material Partners.  Uniendo America annually sees 100 to 300 Rotarians from Canada and the U.S.A. attending and offering to promote a project to their District Clubs. Doreen and I have attended 11 of these Project Fairs.

*It was this type of Partnering that led to our Club’s annual Ben Doz “Hue Hue Tenango, Guatemala Eye Project”, which many of you have attended.  I am sure many experiences with Ben helped to keep you hooked to Rotary and have reached a soft part of your heart, possibly creating a tear.
*A meeting with Dan Graham led him to write to then RI President Glen Kinross about how our District had participated in hundreds of Uniendo America’s International Service Projects.  Also that our Edmonton West Club was active with an incredible 12 Projects in one year.

Dan asked President Glen to consider replicating the Uniendo America experience worldwide.  Almost immediately Glen invited a Rotarian from Australia, Poland, Guatemala, two from the U.S.A. and a Canadian, which was me to attend a meeting at the RI office in Skokie.  At the 4 day gathering with Past Presidents, President Elect, as well as some RI Director and Foundation Trustees occasionally in attendance Uniendo America received moral and financial support.

Encouragement was given for Uniendo to replicate itself; and this was tried, but never came close to duplicating the Uniendo model. Maybe one of us will continue to advance the Uniendo Project Fairs model worldwide.  President Glen also stimulated RI staff to attend many Uniendo America Project Fairs.

Today RI “Convention Friendship House” is more than a place to just meet and mingle with thousands of world Rotarians.  The last decade has a buzz of activity at hundreds of booths where Clubs were seeking Partners to complete their Community Projects.

*Back to trying to outpace Jerome I set off to a attend a 7 p.m. meeting at a country club on the outskirts of Bangkok.
It was late and Doreen decided to stay and catch up on her rest.   I asked the taxi to wait for a few hours until the meeting ended.  The facility was dimly lit with lawn Polynesian torches as I entered to find the meeting room.  Most of the crowd I passed were well dressed and friendly.

Finally I learned the Rotary Club had moved to another location and that I was in the midst of a high end brothel. This would not pass as a legitimate makeup.

*My disease is Rotary where exist some of my best friends and most satisfying moments. Most in this room have the disease.  It is contagious and new members may acquire it if you approach President Annie and offer to help her with our October District Conference, which all of us are attending. This is Annie’s big responsibility and we must elevate her.

This Week's Speaker

BGen (Ret’d) Jim Hunter ~ Air Cadet League

Self-confidence. Self-discipline. Leadership.  These are the core values that the Air Cadet Program aims to foster in our youth.  In partnership with the Department of National Defence, and with the help of our many donors and sponsors, we guide thousands of youth each year in the development of the skills and attributes which they will need to succeed in their chosen professions.

And of course, our Air Cadet Program offers many interesting opportunities in the field of aviation.  In the words of Canadian astronaut, Colonel Jeremy Hansen: “The program has something to offer for all of Canada’s youth. The highlights for me were the flying scholarships and the friendships.”

Whether it is participating in an effective speaking competition, playing in a marching band, competing in a biathlon, or soaring in a glider, our air cadets are having fun while learning and building lasting friendships.

The Air Cadet Program is made possible through the efforts of thousands of volunteers that freely contribute their time and talents at the local, provincial and national levels of the Air Cadet League of Canada.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF EDMONTON WEST

This club has supported the 395 Squadron since 1983. The sponsor financially supports the activities of 395 air cadets. The Rotary Club has received the Top Sponsor Award from the Alberta Provincial Committee during it’s tenure with 395 Squadron.

Sponsoring Committees work in partnership with cadet corps and squadron staff to ensure the viability of the unit.  Their support is intended to complement the resources available from the Canadian Forces.  The responsibility for the sponsoring committees falls to the Air Cadet League – as their Supervisory Sponsor.

Have a great long weekend everyone:)
