The Westerner for March 14, 2016
March 14, Meeting Notes

Meeting: Chair, Fred Kraft; Music, David Gibbens; Grace, Scott Northfield; attendance 20 including 2 guests .

Rotary Business:

Club Funspiel: Lots of fun and friendship was enjoyed by all that came out to the Crestwood Curling club on Sunday.  Fun was had on and off the ice as all who attended were very impressed by the facilities.  Great call Annie!

Grandview Concert Series:  Due to unforeseen circumstances, the March 15th Grandview Concert with Tommy Banks had to be postponed.  Stay tuned for the make up date when it is negotiated with Mr. Banks.

Interact Fundraiser Banquet: Our Interact club has organized a banquet and silent auction as a club fundraiser.  It is planned for April 29th at the Derrick club. Tickets are still available and can be purchased from Lorne Proctor.  Let support to up and coming rotarians and support a great cause.

Capital City Clean Up: This year, we have been asked to give Victoria Park a good spring cleaning. Our planned date is May 1, and we are hoping to have a club BBQ following the work.  Everyone is welcome to this event.  Many hands make light work!

District Training Report:  Darrel Ripley gave the group an overview of the District training that was held this past weekend. There was a definite focus on membership development and although we are doing a lot of things right, there is always room for improvement and we can look forward to seeing a few of the new ideas from the weekend implemented in our club in the coming months.

Captain Brian Holmes Aviation Proficiency Award:  Al Hamilton announced that after a year of working things out, the Bursary to support the award is now active.  Those wishing to contribute to the award that remembers Al's son and supports the 395 squadron can now do so.  Cheques are to be made to <Alberta Provincial Committee>.  Al Holmes will collect any cheques from the club and ask you to fill out a shot form for tax purposes.  All donations are tax deductible.

Cambodia Project report: Darryl White, who just freshly returned from Cambodia gave a short report and update of the last mission.  Highlights included building a home for a family in need, and over 300 kids getting pencils and colouring books.  Darryl was also happy to report that our club has been in contact with a couple of other clubs in our district and hopes to be able to leverage funds from each club to develop a larger economic development project in future years.  Darryl is already in the planning stage for next year with a 'Vacation With A Purpose' which will include some personal vacation time and touring as well as working on some local development

Fine Master: Bill Buckham tested everyones knowledge of professional curling and more specifically the Brier Championship.  Unfortunately, most money was raised when he fined anybody with replacement body parts.

50/50: Mike Ryan and Scott Northfield were lucky enough to have their cards drawn, but not lucky enough to match their playing cards.  Therefore the pot of $389 will still be available for someone at the next meeting.

Joe Lizotte introduced the day's speaker.

The Art Gallery of Alberta
Joan Paton - Senior Manager - Donor Relations

Joan began with a history of the AGA with it's beginnings in 1924 and the Edmonton Museum of the Arts and how it moved from various locations until 2005 when it was renamed the Art Gallery of Alberta with the announcement of an international architectural competition to design a new building.  The wonderful new building opened January 31, 2010.

The new building 85,000 sq. ft. on 5 levels with Exhibition galleries, curatorial preparation areas, storage,  a intrnational museum standard environment, Art Education spaces, studios, a theatre, event spaces and 2 Terraces. It also has a great gift shop, a restaurant, Art rental facilities and collection services.
The facility became an instant landmark in Edmonton and recognizable across the country. Initially drawn by the iconic architecture of our new facility, visitors return for international caliber exhibitions and programs.

Past exhibits have included Mark Chagall, Emily Carr, and even Toulouse Lautrec.  There are many exciting and interesting exhibitions currently at the museum and some very exciting ones planned for the future.  An annual membership is very affordable which will gain you unlimited entry annually.  There are also many other donation options that will help the AGA move forward.

Joan received a few questions and then was thanked very graciously on behalf of the club by Rob Dunsieth.
