Classification Talk - Ken Brander:
Ken's background is in policing and he is currently retired from the Edmonton Police Service and is currently doing consulting in fraud and money laundering . Ken was born in Calgary. His father worked for the railroad and because of this the family moved around quite a bit. Ken was lucky enough to land in Edmonton when he wanted to go to school.
During Ken's time in policing, he did a wide range of work, including walking the beat, working on the SWAT team, worked undercover in the drug unit, sex crimes, economic crimes, and supervisory roles. His last few years really formed what he is doing now by focusing on economic crime, money laundering and corruption. In 2011, he worked with the Canadian Police mission in Kabul, Afghanistan, working on the Afghan threat finance cell, working against money laundering and corruption.
Once he retired, he started his own company, Clarium Fraud and Compliance Solutions. His work does have international customers and this can take him to many places around the world, working with bright young professionals working with anti-corruption agencies. He also keeps busy doing regulatory investigations within the Province and throughout Canada.
Jewelry stores have recently become a growing slice of his business as they have very strict compliance regulations in Canada to avoid money laundering. Due to the fact that most shops don't have the resources to handle this themselves, Clarium is able to assist in this matter.
Clarium also does training to groups and individuals on fraud and compliance. Ken let everyone know of a half day Anti-Corruption Workshop that he is helping to organize. The Keynote Speaker is Dr. Samantha Nutt, the Founder of War Child. The breakfast event will be held at the Polish Hall on Wednesday, October 5th. Contact Ken if you are interested in more information about this event.
Ken and his wife learned of Rotary by being chaperones to Interact trips to Belize and Guatemala. They knew that when life permitted it, they would be more involved, and that time is now.
David and Ken were thanked for their presentations by Brad Arsenault.
