Guest Speaker: Joe introduced Patty Milligan a.k.a. Lola Canola to speak to the club on bees and honey.
Patty presentation was titled "Everything you wanted to know about bees". She explained that there are over 20,000 kinds of bees in the world and they are divided into two main categories: long and short tongued. All bees are pollinators, but it is only the long tongued bees that eat plant nectar. And of those, there are only seven species that are actually honey bees.
Honey bees have looked and acted as wee know them for about 27 million years. As with humans, they originated in Africa and spread to the yest of the world in two different waves. They were brought to North America by European settlers and live alongside about 800 species of indigenous bee species.
Patty then gave a bit of a background about beekeeping. She explained that Alberta produces about 40% of Canada's honey and has approximately 282,000 hives and about 800 different bee keepers. Overall, Canada produces about 90 million pounds of honey per year.
We first met Patty when we were asked to visit the Shaw Convention Centre and see the urban hive that is being hosted there. The following video is all about that project.
Patty was thanked by Rob Dunseith.
