July 13, Meeting Notes

Meeting:  Chair, Fred; music, Jerome via David; grace, Vic; attendance 23; guests including John Bachinski (speaker) and Major Andrew McLellan.

Announcements/Club Business:

Al Hamilton & Friends Golf Classic: Brian Thompson reminded all that the tournament is rapidly approaching (July 23) and we still need a couple of volunteers.  As well we could still use a couple of more items for the silent auction, so if you are able to donate anything or can help out, please contact John Blimke or Brian Thompson.

Enbridge Volunteer Award: Ingrid Neitsch was proud to read the official letter (with cheque attached) from Enbridge in recognition of the amount of volunteer time that Duane Evans has put in with our club.  Thank you to Enbridge for their generosity and support of their employees.

Ramadan: Duane Evans wanted the club to recognize that many in the world are currently observing Ramadan and would soon be celebrating Eid al-Fitr which is a major celebration in the Muslim world.

Fine Master: Ed Schultz presented a "table knock-out" challenge with the topic being the Pan-Am Games that are currently being held in Toronto.  As tables got knocked out, they had to pay the fines and the last table standing was fine exempt.

50/50: Jim Spalding and Dan Graham were lucky enough to have their tickets drawn, but not lucky enough to match playing cards and therefore the pot is being carried over until next week.

Paul Harris Fellow Presentation - Major Andrew McLellan
On behalf of the Rotary Club of Edmonton West, Al Holmes was proud to present Major Andrew McLellan, the CO of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets 395 "Griffon" Squadron with a Paul Harris Fellowship.
The Paul Harris Fellowship is presented to people who have set an example for many by their contributions to our community; their personal involvement makes our community a better place in which to live.  The Rotary club of Edmonton West recognizes all of Major McLellan's efforts and dedication to the 395 Cadets Squadron and has made a contribution to the Rotary Foundation in his name as well as presenting him with the Paul Harris Fellow pin and certificate.

Presentation - Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council (AMVIC):

Joe Lizotte introduced Mr John Bachinski who was letting us know who AMVIC is and what they do and why.

The Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council's mission is to protect the public interest and promote trust and confidence in the motor vehicle industry through heightened awareness and the fostering of a positive exchange of information among industry stakeholders.  They do this by:
  • Protecting Alberta consumers from unfair business practices and working towards building trust and confidence in the motor vehicle industry.
  • Self-managing an effective mandatory motor vehicle industry licensing program.
  • Fostering open and clear communication in the motor vehicle industry and supporting an honest exchange of information between industry, government and consumers.
  • Assisting the motor vehicle industry to build best business practices upon the framework of the Fair Trading Act through education and enforcement of legislation, and,
  • Providing an alternative to litigation through alternate dispute resolution of consumer complaints.
Alberta is a little bit like the Wild west when it comes to buying and selling used vehicles.  There is very little regulation and oversight.  AMVIC is a not-for-profit organization for the purpose of administering motor vehicle industry regulations as outlined in the Fair Trading Act.

John gave us many examples of unfair practices that are occurring throughout the province and some best practices to avoid being taken. But as always, it is "buyer-beware" and it is up to you to watch for many of the traps and understand the rules before you buy a used vehicle in this province.  More information on what AMVIC is and the services that they offer can be found on their website: http://www.amvic.org
