Guest Speaker: Ingrid has become interested in holistic medicine which includes eastern medicine and meditation and introduced Dr. Catherine Phillips, a pioneer in meditation.  Catherine is a graduate of University of Alberta and University of Toronto.  Currently she is Assistant Clinical Professor @ University fo Alberta Department of Psychiatry, a certified MBSR teacher associated with the University of Massachusetts Medical School, founder and director of Mindfulness Institute, director of MBSR Edmonton Programs.

Mindfulness if part of neuroscience of meditation and requires an attitude of open mind.  Awareness emerges through paying attention on purpose in the present moment, and non-judgementally to the unfolding experience moment to moment.  The present moment is the only moment that we can experience the feeling.  With an event perception there is an internal reaction.  If you are not aware and just react to an event there may be unfortunate consequences.  If you are aware, you can choose how to react to/respond to the event.  As you become more aware of your internal and external world, one benefit is stress reduction.  Mediation has been around 2600 years but the period of 1980 to 2015 has encompassed most of the research.

You can contact Catherine at mindfulnessinstitute.ca.

Catherine was thanked by Mike Henry.
