The Westerner for February 22, 2016
February 22, Meeting Notes

Meeting: Chair, Darrel Ripley; Music, Jerome M.; Grace, Art L.; attendance 27 including guests Ken Davies & Michelle Mueller.

Rotary Business:

Casino Dates announced: Bill Buckham announced that our next casino will be held at the Casino Yellowhead on September 27th and 28th.  He also announced that he is looking for a member to take over the position of Casino Chair.  He will work with the new chair to mentor them into the position.

395 Squadron Air Cadets:  Bill also participated in mentoring several cadets in running mock interviews to assist the cadets in preparing in applying for scholarships. He also participated on the promotion board for Warrant Officers.

Belize Fundraiser update: David Gibbens announced that location and dates are set for the Belizean Dinner and Silent Auction.  It will take place at the Parkview Community League Hall on May 7th, 2016.  Tickets will be available to purchase beginning at next meeting at a cost of $50 each. Blank donor request letters were circulated to the membership looking for silent auction items and/or financial support.  One of the main prizes will be a "wine tree" and we are asking that each member donate one or two bottles of wine that will be used to build the tree.

Al Hamilton Golf Tournament: John Blimke announced that the golf tournament date has been set for Thursday, July 21st at the Cougar Creek Golf course

Boyle McCauley Community Centre Lunch:  Our club served 256 meals of lasagna and garlic bread.  The experience was a real eye-opener.  One thing that was noticed was that the centre used regular coffee cups rather than paper or foam cups, but they were short of cups and had to constantly be washing.  So one thing that our club can do is collect extra cups that everyone has at home at some future meetings.  Annie Mueller will collect the cups and take them to the Community Centre for their use.

Habitat for Humanity Build:  All the spots are filled for the March 5th build.  Thanks to all who have signed up, including several Rotoractors.

Curling Funspiel: There are already 20 people signed up for the funspiel at the Crestwood Curling Club on March 13th.  There is lots of space available for other to come and enjoy curling or simply to enjoy the social aspects in the lounge.  Snacks will be server and there is a full bar in the lounge.  Please contact Annie if you are interested in attending.

Vocational/Membership meeting: Darrel reported that the first vocational meeting was a success with 18 people attending the meeting at Darrel's Office.  Much was learned about members businesses and professional interests.  The next meeting will be hosted by Brad Arsenault in March.  Stay tuned for more details.

Fine Master: Ed Schultz tested everyone's knowledge of the latest Rotary magazine articles as well as the Scotties Tournament of Hearts that was taking place in Alberta this year..

50/50: Al Sanderson and Joe Lizotte had their numbers drawn, but did not match playing cards so the pool of over $345 will be carried over to the next meeting.

Sustainability & Architecture
Classification talk by Doug Sollows

Doug explained that 40% of CO2 emissions in North America come from buildings (both private and commercial) and the Architecture industry is taking this very seriously and working towards building with ideas that improve this.

There are currently several different programs that take the improvement of environmental sustainability into account:
•Living Building Challenge
•LEED v4
•Passive House
•2030 Challenge
•Green Globes
•BOMA Best
ASHRAE 90.1

The one that Doug and his company are working towards in the Living Building Challenge.  It is the most stringent sustainable building standard in the world and works off the principle that buildings should mimic natural systems.

Doug's company and much of the architecture industry are really trying to design change in all their projects.  This includes:
•Reducing energy demand
•Optimizing Building envelope
•Energy modeling
•Shape built environment
•Healthy interior environment
•Strengthening the community
•Asset valuation
•Saving money
•Being sustainable

Doug finished the presentation with a quote “By design, Architecture should instill, in people, a value for collaboration, sustainability, equitable communities and respect for nature.”
