July 4, Meeting Notes

Meeting: Chair, Darrel Ripley; Music, Jerome Martin; Grace, Ben Doz; attendance 31 including 3 guests .

Rotary Business:

Upcoming Casino:  Bill Buckham reminded everyone of our upcoming casino (Sept 27-28) and told everyone that phone calls to determine volunteer dates and times for the casino will be forthcoming in the next couple of weeks.  This is a huge fundraiser for us and only happens once every couple of years, so please sign up for at least one shift if you are able.

Guatemala Eye Mission: Ben Doz announced that the dates for this year's eye mission to rural Guatemala are Jan 7 - 18. As always, any Rotarian who is interested in being a part of this important project are asked to talk to Ben Doz directly.  We always need boots on the ground for this mission.

Upcoming Club Community Events: Annie Mueller gave a list of upcoming community and club events that our club has upcoming in the next couple of months. These include the Edmonton Food Bank/Edmonton Eskimos Tackle Hunger Night (July 8), Our club golf tournament (Aug 8), the club fellowship walk and BBQ (Aug 20).  Spencer Mueller also reminded the club of our two upcoming golf events; The Al Hamilton Charity Golf Tournament (July 21) and the club golf day and BBQ (Aug 8).

Grandview Concert Series: This is a reminder of the final Capital Care Concert of the season with Tommy Banks playing at Grandview on Wednesday, July 20.  The concert will run from 6:30 to 7:30.  Please show your support of this wonderful series and the professional musicians by coming out to help close the season with a bang!

Santa Clothes:  Larry Bortles reminded everyone of our initial Santa Clothes date and also reminded everyone that we are still looking for monetary sponsors for the event.  For a taste of what this event will look like, check out this great video from the Las Vegas Rotary Club who we has been running a project like this for several years. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WER76RCu9pU

Fine Master: Fine Bill Buckham not only recognized and fined members with Anniversaries and Birthdays in July, buy challenges members knowledge of the different Rotary fellowships that are part of Rotary International.  did you know that there are 65 different Rotary fellowships?  You can check them all out at My Rotary.

50/50: Al Sanderson and Fred Kraft had their tickets drawn, but unfortunately did not match cards from the deck and therefore allowed the pot to grow until at least next week.

The 2016 Rotary International Convention - President Darrel Ripley

Darrel wanted first and foremost to thank the Rotary Club of Edmonton West for sponsoring his attendance to the convention.  All President Elects within our club are given mnetary assistance to attend the convention, but all Rotarians are able to attend and Darrel recommended doing that to all members in attendance.  The next two conventions are going to be held in North America (Atlanta in 2017 and Toronto in 2018).

Darrel explained that the event and the speakers are wonderful, but his favourite part was the people that he met and the different ideas that came from that fellowship.

The South Korea convention was held in Goyang City Which is about a 45 minute train ride from downtown Seoul.  It was held there as it was the largest convention space that could accommodate the 43,000 attendees.

There was a huge "Rotary House of Friendship" in the adjacent hall and what surprised Darrel was that there was not only Rotary projects on display, but a huge amount of other retail shops that were set up.

The program for the convention was made available online, and there was a mobile app available as well to allow you to move around the convention centre and plan your itinerary with ease.  The whole convention was very high tech which shows how modern the Rotary organization is becoming.

But again, Darrel kept coming back to the point that it was the other Rotarians that he met that always kept him surprised and recharged.  Although we have an active club with well rounded activities and ideas, the convention and the people in attendance kept making him personally ask himself what more we could do.

With 34,000 clubs and 1.2 million members, what we have already done is impressive, but the possibilities of what we can still do are endless.

Darrel and his wife Peggy followed the convention with a tour of China which with a tour company from California that is run by Rotarians.  Because of the instant fellowship of being Rotarians, the tour was wonderful and many future friendships were made and the tour was spectacular.
