The Westerner for April 4, 2016
April 4, Meeting Notes

Meeting: Chair, Fred Kraft; Music, Jerome Martin; Grace, Annie Mueller; attendance 30 including 2 guests .

Rotary Business:

Capital City Cleanup - Kit building: Many thanks to all the club members who spent many hours this past Saturday building cleanup kits for the City of Edmonton's Capital City Cleanup program.  It was a long day, but lots of laughs were shared by everyone.

Interact Fundraiser Banquet: Our Interact club has organized a banquet and silent auction as a club fundraiser.  It is planned for April 29th at the Derrick club. Tickets are still available and can be purchased from Lorne Proctor.  Let support to up and coming rotarians and support a great cause.

Capital City Clean Up: The park that we have been assigned has changed and currently planned to be Gallagher Park, but that may change before the actual date. Our date is May 1, and that will not change. We are still hoping to have a club BBQ following the work.  Everyone is welcome to this event.  Many hands make light work!

Captain Brian Holmes Aviation Proficiency Award:  Al Hamilton announced that after a year of working things out, the Bursary to support the award is now active.  Those wishing to contribute to the award that remembers Al's son and supports the 395 squadron can now do so.  Cheques are to be made to <Alberta Provincial Committee>.  Al Holmes will collect any cheques from the club and ask you to fill out a shot form for tax purposes.  All donations are tax deductible.

Belize Fundraiser update: Duane Evans reported that we have a solid start on donations for the silent auction and door prizes, but will still accept more if people still have items to donate.  Now we need people to help sell tickets to the event.  If you want tickets for yourself and/or friends and coworkers contact Duane Evans or David Gibbens and they will sell you as many as you need.

Club Golf Tournament: Spencer Mueller announced that our annual club golf tournament has been booked for August 8th at the Lewis Estate Golf club.  There are 20 tee times available on a first come basis.  So if you want to guarantee a spot, contact Spencer directly.

Rotary District 5360/5370 Bonspiel: President Fred announce that the Board of Directors has agreed to have our club put forward a proposal to host the bonspiel which will be held in late February or early March 2018.  Tha annual bonspiel has not been held in Edmonton since 1989, and this has not gone unnoticed by other clubs in the province.  Fred is positive that our club will put forward both a wonderful proposal and a very successful bonspiel and everyone in the club will be able to have input into the event.

District Conference 2018:  As part of being the home club for the District Governor in 2018, our club has the privilege of hosting the distict conference that year. The innaugural meeting of the planning committee was held over the past week and more information will be coming to the club over the next few weeks as dates and venues are locked down.  This will be a very volunteer intensive project and all members will be relied on heavily to assist in making this event the best in recent memory.

Fine Master: Being an RCMP officer, Bob G. tested everyone knowledge of current Canadian laws.  These little know laws included not being able to publicly remove bandages and not being able to set fire to the wooden leg of a wooden legged man.  Many fines and many laughs were collected based on our lack of knowledge of these quirky Canadian laws.

50/50: Brian T. and Al H. were lucky enough to have their cards drawn, but not lucky enough to match their playing cards.  Therefore the pot of nearly $400 will still be available for someone at the next meeting.  There are very few cards left in the deck, so the odds of winning will be very high over the next few meetings.

The Edmonton Police Service - Canine Unit
Constable Brian Parker and PSD Ella

Constable Parker provided a general background of the Canine Unit, explaining that it has been operating since 1967 and is part of the Support Division of EPS.  The unit will be celebrating it's 50th anniversary next year with several events.

There are currently 12 general purpose canine teams in Edmonton, with several of the units having additional profiles such as drugs amd explosives.

The Primary function of the unit is to provide support to patrol units by responding to calls in progress and supporting general calls for service.  The unit provide 24/7 coverage to Tactical, Surveillance, Drug and Gang Units.

Constable Parker explained many of the technical ways that a dog works with the police and what type of dog makes a good service dog.  He also explained the process of how a police service dog is identified, raised and trained.

There were many and various questions from members regarding all aspects of working with the dogs.  Everyone was excited to actually meet Ella as she was brought into the meeting.

Cosnstable Parker was thanked by Rotarian Doug Sollows for his entertaining and enlightening presentation.
