National Indigenous Peoples' Day: Reconciliation and Peace Building
Jun. 21, 2021 12:00 p.m.
Please join the Rotary Club of Edmonton West on Monday June 21st, Canada's National Indigenous Peoples Day, as Lorelei Higgins speaks to us on "Reconciliation and Peace Building". As a Métis Canadian, Lorelei Higgins comes by her peacebuilding roots naturally. Lorelei’s Métis heritage can be traced from the Red River in Winnipeg, Manitoba where her great-grandfather came across to Canada from Kent, England, and met her great-grandmother – a Cree and Ojibwe community leader. In this beautiful coming together of different worlds, Lorelei says that peacebuilding is literally in her DNA. Lorelei has often found herself weaving and mediating between these different worldviews, finding the beauty at the points where the worlds come together – that of her Indigenous ancestry and her European heritage. It is not always easy to be Indigenous, especially as a Métis person. But, as Lorelei has deepened her own cultural exploration over the years, she has learned to look at this duality of identity as a gift. She no longer sees herself as between worlds. Rather, she embraces the beauty of both worlds, inspired by Terry St. Amant’s words: “We are not ‘half’ of anything, but doubled.” Lorelei's work has taken her across the globe: she has been based in Asia, South Americam Europe, Africa and North America, working on various projects. When she was 17 Lorelei went on a Rotary youth exchange to South Africa in 1998-1999. The ZOOM coordinates for the meeting are provided below. ZOOM will open at 11:45 AM and our Edmonton West weekly meeting will start promptly at 12 Noon. Improving the Lives of Canada's Elders in the Wake of the Covid Pandemic
Aug. 16, 2021 12:00 p.m.
André Picard is a Canadian journalist and author specializing in health care issues. He works as a reporter and a columnist for the national newspaper The Globe and Mail. He runs the news organization's office in Montreal. He is the recipient of the 1993 Michener Award for meritorious public service journalism. Mr. Picard recently published a book on the state of elder care in Canada: Neglected No More: The Urgent Need to Improve the Lives of Canada's Elders in the Wake of a Pandemic It took the coronavirus pandemic to open our eyes to the deplorable state of so many of the nation's long-term care homes: the inhumane conditions, overworked and underpaid staff, and lack of oversight. In this timely new book, esteemed health reporter André Picard reveals the full extent of the crisis in eldercare, and offers an urgently needed prescription to fix a broken system. When COVID-19 spread through seniors' residences across Canada, the impact was horrific. Along with widespread illness and a devastating death toll, the situation exposed a decades-old crisis: the shocking systemic neglect towards our elders. Called in to provide emergency care in some of the hardest-hit facilities in Ontario and Quebec, the military issued damning reports of what they encountered. And yet, the failings that were exposed--unappetizing meals, infrequent baths, overmedication, physical abuse and inadequate personal care--have persisted for years in these institutions. |

Youth is the future of Rotary
Aug. 30, 2021 12:00 p.m.
Youth is the future of Rotary. Now is the time to build upon the foundation of the hard work of so many Rotarians and young leaders in our District as we re-engage and look forward to meeting in-person. Our youth leaders do make a difference and change lives.
Under the guidance and leadership of Rotary District 5370 Youth Services Co-Chairs Elizabeth Bonkink (Rotary Club Edmonton Gateway) and Myles Dyles (MacEwan Rotaract), our benchmark youth programs are moving forward in new and exciting ways.
Club and District support is so important as we work towards in-person youth programs: RYLA, RYLE, RYPEN, Youth Exchange, Interact and Rotaract. This means we need to invest time, talents, energy, mentorship and continue to invest financially in creating opportunities for these young leaders to grow and continue their Rotary journey.
Myles and Elizabeth will share a new video created to showcase the success stories of so many young leaders in our District. These benchmark programs truly make a difference and open doors to creating opportunities for our future leaders in Rotary and our communities.
Guests in attendance will be Past District Governor and Youth Services chair, Laura Morie and Tamara Larson, Past Youth Services Chair 2015-2019 as well as Rotary Club of Edmonton West sponsored Rotaract and Interact Clubs.

Rotary District 5370 Indigenous Speakers Series
We are all called to action: The National Day of Truth and Reconciliation Senator Patti LaBoucane-Benson is a Métis from Treaty 6 territory in Alberta. She is currently the Government Liaison and is the first Indigenous woman to hold a leadership position in the Senate. Her 30-year career has been dedicated to serving her community in Alberta, across Canada and around the world—as the director of a Boys and Girls Club in St. Paul in 1990, through 23 years of service at Native Counselling Services of Alberta (NCSA), and Conference Director and Lead Facilitator of the Nelson Mandela Dialogues in Canada, an international gathering of freedom fighters that took place on Enoch Cree Nation in 2017. Patti’s research for her PhD in Human Ecology (University of Alberta) focused on how Indigenous families and communities experience their own resilience in response to multiple forms of trauma. Her lifelong work has become an extended conversation about healing from historic trauma. Patti’s perspectives on this conversation are rooted in her transformative experiences of the Cree ceremony. The Elders’ teachings of kindness, respect, humility, and honesty have informed her life as well as her research into best practices for Indigenous offender healing, domestic violence, and historic trauma-informed service delivery. Her most recent research bridges neuroscience and Indigenous knowledge of child development, as well as finding common ground between Western and Indigenous water science. As a recognized catalyst for change, Dr. LaBoucane-Benson was appointed to Alberta Ministerial Panel for Child Intervention (2017-18) that resulted in Bill 18: Child Protection and Accountability Act. The primary focus of the panel was reducing the overrepresentation of Indigenous children in care in Alberta. Patti brought her PhD research to life through a work of creative non-fiction, an award-winning graphic novel—The Outside Circle (House of Anansi, 2015)—that tells the story of an inner-city Aboriginal family who transcend poverty, gang affiliation, and hopelessness. Her teaching materials are used in classrooms across Canada and in training sessions for professionals. Dr. LaBoucane-Benson continues to share her knowledge of healing from historic trauma with educators, healthcare professionals, lawyers and policy makers, as well as Indigenous communities. She believes that healing and reconciliation dialogue is the way forward in Canada, with focus on surfacing the common ground between Western and Indigenous people. The best, most useful policy and legislation will reflect this shared space that unites us as a society. Appointed to the Senate in October 2018, Senator Patti LaBoucane-Benson lives fully in the space that helps define Canada. She is an avid gardener, and her husband Allen is a traditional Nehiyaw (Cree) hunter; they believe that food security includes the respectful harvest of food from the land. They live near Stony Plain, Alberta, with their son Gabriel, on an acreage that has hosted ceremony, workshops, and dozens of transformational conversations with Elders, elected officials, and leaders from around the world. This is not intended to be an ask but rather an information presentation of what CapitalCare is doing and how the new centre will be especially effective for the growing needs of our seniors. The efficiencies with this new centre will be incredible. I believe this will be a template for the future of senior healthcare. Volunteers need to be onsite for 5:45 PM until 8:45 PM. There will be a couple of milk jugs to collect money in and there will be metal bins with cardboard sleeves to collect the food donations. The Rotary Club of Edmonton West has a distinguished history and membership, but has faced a number of challenges this past year. The Board and many members have recognized the need to shift, adapt and to adjust as we go forward. Covid restrictions and not meeting in-person have resulted in a number of new realities for the club as we face the future, including new financial implications for members. Rotary International has also expanded its priorities and areas of focus. A lot has changed! You are invited to join club members to identify and discuss issues/topics that you feel need clarity moving forward. Please register ! Doug Sallow's has kindly offered his office spaces so we might meet in small groups. "Nibblies" will be served, do bring your preferred beverage. Coffee will be available. Note: For those zooming in, we will identify a facilitator. We'll need to figure this out. Zoom Meeting link. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81327174693

Dec. 18, 2021 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Volunteering for the Salvation Army's Christmas Kettle Campaign has been an Edmonton West tradition for many years. It is a great opportunity to spend time with fellow rotarians, ring some bells and spread Christmas Cheer. And of course help raise funds for a very worthy cause. What is the Christmas Kettle Campaign? What happens to the money raised? Funds raised through donations made at Christmas kettles, together with other sources of funds, help provide direct, compassionate, hands-on service to over 1.9 million people each year in Canada, restoring hope and dignity to those who might otherwise remain invisible in society. When: Saturday December 18 When you sign up please let me know in the notes section what time you wish to start and for how long. I will come up with a schedule that will work for everyone. Cheers, Annie |
