Please join the Rotary Club of Edmonton West as we host Anne Marie Kallal and Kieran Leblanc who will introduce us to the Cultural Connections Institute - The Learning Exchange (CCI-LEX). Anne Marie Kallal is the Executive Director of the Cultural Connections Institute - The Learning Exchange (CCI-LEX) and Kieran Leblanc is a supporter and volunteer (and a former member of Rotary Edmonton West). CCI offers English classes to all newcomers and visitors to Canada with certifed TESL instructors. LEX offers English classes for permanent residents, refugees and citizens of Canada with volunteer instructors.We look forward to hearing more about these valuable programs. Rotary Club of Edmonton West invitation - Join us! Monday, February 22 @ noon via Zoom. Chris Offer is a member of the Rotary Peace Centers committee and will be vice chair in 2021-22. He is a Rotary Positive Peace Activator and IEP (Institute for Economics and Peace) Ambassador. He just completed a 3-year term as chair of the Rotary Peace Major Gifts Initiative Committee. The committee’s goal is to raise US$50 million for the Rotary Peace Centers and Rotary’s peace area of focus
He has been a Rotary volunteer in Philippines, Russia, China, Laos, and India. In 2016, he was part of a team including WHO, CDC and Gates Foundation evaluating the polio surveillance initiative in Nigeria. He served on similar polio surveillance teams in South Sudan and Sudan. Chris retired from the Vancouver Police after 31 years of police service. He served in a variety of senior operational and administrative positions retiring as a District Commander. He has a degree in Criminology (Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, BC), Graduate Diploma in Public Sector Management (University of Victoria) and a Master of Arts in Public Administration (Carleton University, Ottawa). Chris is an accomplished photographer. His photos have been published in local and national newspapers, books, and calendars. He enjoys street and nature photography. He is a frequent speaker at Rotary events.

Please join the Rotary Club of Edmonton West on Monday March 15 2021 as we host Dr. Patricia Makokis who will speak to us about "Allyship with First Nations Communities". Patricia Makokis, Ed.D. is acclaimed as one of Canada's most outstanding Aboriginal leaders. She is an author, speaker and a pioneer for Aboriginal education, health and values. Patricia is the recipient of many awards for her exceptional work in advancing opportunities for her people. She was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal Award and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of San Diego amongst others. Patricia has a Doctorate in Education (Ed.D.), with a major in leadership, from the University of San Diego. Dr. Makokis is an authority on Aboriginal values. She lives them daily. Residing on the Saddle Lake Cree Nation in Northern Alberta, she has embraced both the Cree culture and the western world view. Patricia is a testament to the fact that "education and hard work are the two most important factors to relieve the plight of Aboriginal people in Canada today". She is a proud Cree. This is not something that she just preaches. She's passionate about it and she puts it into practice. The ZOOM coordinates for the meeting are provided below. The U School Program

U School is a program run by the University of Alberta Senate that aims to introduce and connect students in grades 4 through 9 from socially vulnerable, Aboriginal (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) and rural communities to the University of Alberta. Classes, with their classroom teachers, attend a week-long immersion experience on campus led by our U School staff team. Their week's schedule is built around the teacher's application, Alberta curriculum, and the many opportunities available at the U of A. Our speaker is a 2020-2021 GSA Senator of the University. |
