Dec. 18, 2021 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Volunteering for the Salvation Army's Christmas Kettle Campaign has been an Edmonton West tradition for many years. It is a great opportunity to spend time with fellow rotarians, ring some bells and spread Christmas Cheer. And of course help raise funds for a very worthy cause. What is the Christmas Kettle Campaign? What happens to the money raised? Funds raised through donations made at Christmas kettles, together with other sources of funds, help provide direct, compassionate, hands-on service to over 1.9 million people each year in Canada, restoring hope and dignity to those who might otherwise remain invisible in society. When: Saturday December 18 When you sign up please let me know in the notes section what time you wish to start and for how long. I will come up with a schedule that will work for everyone. Cheers, Annie |

Join Al Sanderson on ZOOM, Monday, January 10 @ 11:45 am - meeting to begin at 12:00 noon Our speaker - Tamara Larson -- will introduce us to President Mehta's priority Empowering Girls Initiative Girls face many challenges across the world, including lack of education attainment and lack of sanitary facilities in schools. The initiative encourages Rotary, Rotaract and Interact club members to participate in service projects that focus on the health, education, safety, well-being and economic development of girls worldwide and address the inequities still present today. Learn how Empowering Girls aligns with Rotary's seven areas of focus and our Action Plan as well as how we can increase our impact that protect, empower, and create equity for girls and women locally, nationally, and internationally. Our Club traditionally observes Robbie Burns Day with haggis and a toast to the bard. This year, we will be prevented from gathering by the pandemic, but we will come together virtually on Zoom to toast the immortal memory of Burns and hear some of his great poetry. Feel free to order your own haggis (if that is to your taste) and to have a dram of fine Scots whisky to hand for when the toasts are made. Particulars of the virtual meeting are as follows: Time: Jan 24, 2022 11:45 AM Mountain Time (US and Canada) https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84013349048?pwd=bllUc2tOZDJlMi9VdXFoREdGQ0Y0dz09 Meeting ID: 840 1334 9048 Passcode: 662980 Meeting ID: 840 1334 9048 The Club recently lost longtime member, Doug MacDougall. Doug made many contributions to the Club over the years, but he will always be remembered for the pride he took in his Scottish heritage and his devotion to the memory of Robert Burns. Doug delivered the toast to the bard at many of our annual Burns Night observances and he will be sorely missed this year. Here is a link to Doug’s obituary, in case you missed it: https://necrocanada.com/obituaries-2021/macdougall-dr-douglas-2021/ A tribute to Doug’s memory will be led by Bill Buckham and you will be welcome to contribute your reminiscences of Doug. We look forward to seeing you online on Monday. |

This experience is intended for high school students (grades 9 to 12) who would like to gain or strengthen their leadership skills and learn how to be active citizens who strive to make a positive impact in the world.
The programming of the camp has three main focuses: interpersonal growth, communication, and community building and global citizenship. Students are encouraged to take part on a challenge-by-choice basis and ample opportunity is given for each participant to express their individuality and test their strengths.
One of the greatest outcomes of the program, however, is the relationships, communities, and trust that are built within the camp. Over a short, yet intense, period the students develop strong trust with both the counsellors and other campers. The bonds formed at RYLE have proven time and time again to form lasting supports and many of our alumni are still in contact with each other years later. The camp further acts as a gateway into the Rotary Community, providing trackways and opportunities to service-oriented individuals to become involved on a wider scale. Our students enter RYLE as individuals primed for growth. They leave as leaders and part of our Rotary family.
This year's RYLE conference is scheduled for April 28 to May 1 and will be held in person at Camp Nakamun if pandemic health restrictions permit. Please email ryle5370@gmail.com with any questions, comments, or concerns.

He approached Jerome Martin, who enlisted Ron Hutchinson to assist in locating the fund. It had been well managed by the University of Alberta Administration and had grown to nearly $500,000.

A Conversation about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Mar. 21, 2022
Rotary Club of Edmonton West Join Zoom Meeting Jennifer Jones, in-coming RI President for 2022-23, has made Imagine DEI (https://my-cms.rotary.org/en/document/imagine-dei-brochure-2022-2023-presidential-initiative) a 2022-23 Presidential Initiative as part of her theme Imagine Rotary. DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) can be seen both as part of Rotary’s DNA and as something to be explored to reinvigorate our values, enhance our flexibility, grow our numbers, and expand our impact. Although we see DEI as critical for our global impact, the numbers show we have a way to go. RI’s demographics show 69% male and an average age of 61. (The numbers are higher for RCEW). During the 2022-23 year, Jones encourages each of us to do our part to ensure Rotary is a welcoming and inclusive community by:
We have invited two guests to be part of a conversation sharing their thoughts, and their experiences with DEI and helping organizations along the journey. Sara Buczynski has worked in the settlement sector for over 10 years. In this field she has had the opportunity to work at Citizenship and Immigration Canada, in community programming and development, and coordinating refugee resettlement. Sara currently works in the Rainbow Refuge Program at EMCN supporting LGBTQ+ newcomers and refugees, and is a co-cordinator of the LGBTQ+ Newcomer Edmonton Group. When she first started in the sector she noticed there were no safe services available for LGBTQ+ newcomers in Edmonton, and since then has actively worked to advocate and establish relevant services and programming in our community. Rainbow Refuge and the LGBTQ+ Newcomer group are the first programs in Edmonton and have now been running for almost 5 years. Shelley Sabo is a new Rotarian in the YEG Passport Club. She is thoughtful about how a DEI prism helps translate Rotary values into practices that fosters diversity within YEG Passport and in how it relates with partner organizations. Shelley has a small grant writing and facilitation business called Stone Soup Village. We invite you to be part of the conversation, by Zoom, March 21 at the regular meeting of the Rotary Club of Edmonton West.

COVID-19 and Our Children
Apr. 25, 2022
Rotary Club of Edmonton West Virtual Meeting
Monday, April 25 @ 12:00 pm
Topic: Dr. Leighton - COVID-19 and our Children
Time: Apr 25, 2022 12:00 PM Edmonton Meeting ID: 837 2821 0427. The last two years of the COVID-19 pandemic and measures have been devastating for many children's social, emotional and academic wellness. Health directives that have included intermittent school closures and virtual learning, have hurt the most vulnerable children. As duty bearers in children's lives, adults need to own this and be aware that their outsized fears and risks have hurt children. Adults must now improve this devastation for children as they go back to school and resume their emotional lives.
Jacqueline P. Leighton is a professor and registered psychologist in human cognition and development. Working at the University of Alberta for over 20 years, her training in psychology and psychometrics have led to numerous studies and publications that carefully scrutinize conventional wisdom about measures and data regarding human wellness.

Please register today for our Club luncheon meeting to be held at the University Club on May 16, 2022 at 12 noon. Rotarian Rob Dunseith has just returned from a three-week holiday in Ireland and will share his experience of travel in what is hopefully a late stage of the Covid pandemic. His travels took him to all four provinces of Ireland including spending some time in his family’s homeland of Northern Ireland. He and Elizabeth were present during the recent local elections in which the nationalist Sinn Fein party received the largest number of seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly. Rob argues that this represents a significant watershed in the peace process begun with the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, one of the best examples of peace building we have witnessed in the modern era. Our club will have a special guest, Claudia Caluori, from Italy. She is a Rotarian and Rotary Peace Fellow and will share her experiences with us. PARTICIPATION OPTIONS In-person attendance will include lunch for $25 per person, payable in cash or by cheque at the door. Zoom attendance for those unable to attend in-person will be free. Masks are recommended inside the University Club when attendees are not seated for lunch. Those who plan to attend in person are asked to register by Thursday, May 12, 2022.
