It's time to "Tackle Hunger" again by collecting Food Bank donations at the Eskimo's Game!! Edmonton’s Food Bank will be at the June 21st game between the BC Lions and our Edmonton Eskimos for the Purolator Tackle Hunger. Purolator has a different plan this year. They are not promoting the event and we will only be collecting monetary donations. So I am looking for 8 volunteers who don't mind being loud and asking for donations outside the stadium gates. We won't be getting any tickets to the game, so we will be done at 7:30 pm. Let’s Tackle Hunger Together! Friday June 21 ~ 5:15 to 7:30 pm. We are still looking for volunteers to help to grow Edmonton’s urban forest! I have arranged for our club to be part of a Guided Planting Event that will help us to meet our environmental and community service targets, while having a fun day in nature! We will be joined by Rotarians from other clubs and our Vimy Ridge Interacters. Karen Gibbens Planting Date: Saturday, July 20, 2019, from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM Location: Brookside Neighbourhood Directions & Parking: Brookside planting site can be accessed from 53rd Avenue, exiting from Whitemud Dr. From 53rd Avenue, turn onto 142 Street. There is ample parking available along the residential streets in adjacent areas. Your Program Leaders will arrange a meeting location with you. This is an outdoor event, so please dress for the weather. Working in a natural area, it is possible that you may encounter thistles, sticks, or garbage. Consider dressing in layers, long pants, and a hat. You and your volunteers must wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes, such as runners. Volunteers will not be allowed to participate in the event if they are wearing inappropriate footwear, such as sandals, flip-flops, or high heel shoes. Remember to bring a water bottle and snacks, as planting trees can be a very physical activity! Please bring sunscreen, bug spray, and anything else that may make your planting event an enjoyable experience. We will supply you with shovels, gloves, and planting material. Cheers, Annie

The Food Bank has asked for our usual team of dedicated and fabulous Rotary Club of Edmonton West Volunteers for their main fundraising and food collection event. I still need volunteers......please let me know asap. Game day is Friday, August 9th vs the Ottawa Red Blacks. Volunteers need to be there by 6:00 pm at Gate 13. At this game we will be collecting food and funds as we did last year. The 4 Food Bank trucks will be on site and our volunteer team will be at Gate 13. We will be given passes to watch the game after the second quarter. Please let me know if you can volunteer. |

Everyone will meet at Spencer and Annie's home, 20707 - 55 Avenue NW at 4 pm, and we will walk from there. Afterwards we will have a pot luck BBQ. The food arrangements can be sorted out closer to the date. This annual event is always so much fun and a great way to spend time with friends. So lace up your walking shoes and sign up! Peggy has booked the cabin for 3 nights – starting on the Thursday. It works out to $350 per night for the whole cabin. It says capacity of 10 - 14. If we have 10 then it would be only $105 per person for 3 days. The hike is 9 km – 200 m elevation in the 1st half and then back down for the 2nd half. Starting point is in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park – Upper Kananaskis Lakes. The sleeping area is upstairs but there is one bedroom downstairs with one bunk bed in it. For whoever least likes climbing to the loft! Let me know if you are interested. Cheers, Annie

Sustainable and Inspirational International Literacy Projects

Over the past 10 years, the Rotary Club of Red Deer has worked with multiple partners to implement quality literacy improvement projects in Belize. The projects include a variety of professional development symposiums for educators as well as literacy camps for children. The success of the project is highly dependent on the relationships with local citizens, schools, rotary clubs and government. |

As you are aware, Duart and his family have supported and assisted John Kbanga and his family to settle in Canada. Our club has also been supporting them this past year. It is with enormous pleasure that I can tell you that John and his family have qualified for a Habitat for Humanity home in Carter Place. I have scheduled an event for 10 volunteers at Carter Place, and all of our hours will go towards the 500 hours that John and his family need. Date: Saturday September 14 If you would like to volunteer please let me know and I will send you more information. As there are only 10 spots I will take on a first come first served basis. It has become a tradition for us to serve Thanksgiving Dinner to the folks who use the Boyle Street Community Services. We will be decorating, setting up, serving the meal and cleaning up afterwards. Our club will be providing the dessert of pumpkin pies again as they were much appreciated. If you are there for 7:30 pm then the first round is on us!! Around the world, Rotarians have pledged to raise $150 million dollars(US) over the next 3 years. Through the Rotary International Foundation all Polio funds raised are matched 2 to 1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which means the total will grow to nearly $2100. The Government of Canada has also pledged another $75 million towards the final push to keep children everywhere around the world free from the terrible effects of this preventable disease. Our club will be having a Pub Night fundraiser to recognize World Polio Day.
Date: Friday October 25 There is parking to the rear of the building. Everyone will be responsible for their own food and drinks. Please let me know by October 18th if you plan to attend.

This is our most popular volunteer event. It is a great way to help the Food Bank. We will either be building hampers or sorting donated food: Hamper Makers complete the food hampers by adding additional perishable and non-perishable food to the “Starter Kit”. At this time, special attention is paid to dietary requests as well requests for special items such as toiletries or dish soap based on availability. The volume of hampers must be recorded and hampers must be accurately labelled for delivery to the client and/or food depot. In 2018, over 4 million kilograms of food was donated to or gleaned by Edmonton's Food Bank. Sorters are responsible for going through all non-perishable donations and checking the condition of the packaging and the best before dates. Once the food is checked, it is organized and stored appropriately to be brought to the hamper line or agency row. Date: Tuesday October 29 Let me know if you would like to volunteer. Cheers, Annie

Our Club will be helping out with the Salvation Army's annual Kettle Campaign again this year. So if you would like to shake some Christmas Bells.....no musical talent required....and raise some money for a great organization, please sign up. The location will be the Costco on 149 Street in the west end, and will be inside the building. We will need 2 people for each 2 hour shift: Saturday December 14th: Shifts: 10:00 - 12:00 pm, 12:00 - 2:00 pm 2:00 - 4:00 pm 4:00 - 6:00 pm Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering. I heard back from the Christmas Bureau and they have allowed me to arrange a group booking without individuals having to sign up!! I have 5 spots.....so 5 cars with people! Location:
St Francis of Assissi School - 6614 - 129 Avenue
You will line up behind the other vehicles in line.
You will get your hampers to deliver around the city.
If someone is not home (always great to call before hand) when you deliver the hamper you will need to return it to the school
A confirmation email will come to you next week.
