DESCRIPTION:A relatively little-known and little-visited valley\, this area
is one of the true gems of the Rockies! The Fryatt Hut offers a superb ba
se for exploration both summer and winter with excellent alpine climbing a
nd ski-touring all within fairly easy reach of the cabin. The hut received
a major facelift and interior makeover in the summer of 1999 and then aga
in in 2012. The interior is roomier with a new bunk design\, new benches a
nd tables\, flooring and kitchen. It has a propane system for cooking and
lighting and a wood stove for heating. The approach is usually completed i
n a long day\, but some parties will appreciate the Parks campsites which
are strategically located along the trail\, breaking the trip into two day
s during the summer.  Bikes can also be used for the first 11 km\, as far
as the first campsite at Fryatt Creek\, which will substantially reduce t
he total approach time and makes for a fun trip out! Yet another option is
to canoe across the Athabasca River\, cutting off 7 km. That will be our
plan. Al and/or Jim have offered to bring along a canoe. We have booked a
Hotel on Thursday night in Hinton (thanks Al) and will travel to the trail
head Friday morning. From Jasper\, d rive south on that I ce fields P
arkway (HWY 93) 430 km to the turn off at Athabasca Falls. Turn right an
d follow hwy 93 a for just over a kilometre and turn left on the Geraldine
fire Road. Follow this narrow bumpy road for 2 km to the unassuming parki
ng area. The Geraldine fire Road is not for vehicles with low suspension i
t is there that we could have a canoe to shuttle from the 7 km mark.
